Wellington newbie. Ideas for 1st 4x4?

Post by BAUSHOG »

Hey,

New to the forum been reading for a while tho.

Keen to get into the 4x4 scene still looking around trademe for a first 4x4. Ideally petrol. Also need it to be road worthy but not a daily driver, will mainly be used for offroad.

Looked into a few Pajero 3.5 V6 and pretty keen on the XJ Cherokee. But being told to stick away from the LWB.

I know everyone is different but keen on any advice. Will spend upto 4k.
Any ideas for 4x4 clubs too?
Cheers.

Welcome.

I guess your selection will ultimately depend on budget.

Will this be a daily driver? Not sure how thirsty the Cherokees are.

For your budget there would be plenty of pajeros around Id say. Handle reasonably well off road standard, and with a couple of upgrades can go most places.

I just got a cheap Pajero that I've taken out once and was really surprised at where it could go! They seem to have good ability standard with good diff locks.
Mine's too rusty to spend money on so I'm just going to give it a hard time.
Quite hungry on petrol though.
Otherwise hiluxs and safaris seem the norm for first 4wds.

Hey - heres a Paj I spotted in Petone today, looks tidier than mine and cheaper than what I paid for mine!

Already has nice leather seats and the shiny chrome mirrors and bumpers.
Looks like its been used as a family wagon which makes a good starting point.

Terranos are nice and cheap, got a fair bit of power and heaps of parts around.

not to mention theres some cheap mods out there to make them really capable offroad.

shit yeah go pajero. my only regret with mine is I never get to use it anymore. lol.
I've chucked a set of 31" m/t tyres on mine and it gets me everywhere I wanna go. I'm not very hardout, though.
if you get a 3.5 or a 2.8 diesel i believe they're 2" bodylifted from factory? so you can get 33s under there straight away. I may be wrong.

fakey's parent's safari looks like a good deal too?

Yeah Fakeys Pootrol would be an awesome (literally) first 4x4. Wish I'd just gone to a Safari/Patrol straight off the bat, breathers are all done (bar the rear diff which could be put into the bonnet with the rest of them) auto box is strong as shit, they'll do 400+kms on an engine, and are one of the most capable factory trucks.

He's asking a low price too, and the rust around the rear windows is a separate frame which can be removed and replaced with solid windows.
