Poll on Wether to have a discussion on tyre sizes.
Poll on Wether to have a discussion on tyre sizes.
Do we move forward and attempt to create some formal discussion on the potential tyre size debate?
Yes or No should suffice at this point. We can get into sizes or diff clearance dimension once we see if theres any support for the concept.
Note: If you dont want to be a part of the discussion, by all means click no. BUT, dont then start whinging about shit after the fact. Here's everyones chance.
Lets give it a week, poll closes say 6pm Saturday 8th
Try this: (and those who want to remain anonymous can PM me, youll just have to trust that I put down the correct numbers, as it wont be transparent.)

i vote no as it will only end up in a sh-t fight between the super and the not so super

ok, so no poll....
So much for that idea.
Perhaps I'll just sit here with a pad and pen and tick boxes... or not.

xj (Mark), this is the most sensible Post that has been submitted in a long time. Now lets see how ORE members can react in a mature manner. We as a group of 4WD enthusiasts have the opportunity to have sensible input to a satisfying result or do nothing and have the result made for us. This tyre subject is nothing new and has been smoldering for a long time and although a lot of you think it is being driven by one person for what ever agenda you may believe I believe there is more to it than that. At present there is talk of authority cards, nobody was ever going to have certification for modifications (yeah right), this is now law. Now the next item to be looked at and controlled after the 100mm lift will be tyre size, one goes hand in hand with the other. Once authorities come down with a ruling on tyre size it will be to late, how do you think the Hot Rod and Modification groups got around the rules ------ ? yeah that's right they made them.

Yes lets try and keep this mature and minimise negative comments and stirring.
Re: Poll on Wether to have a discussion on tyre sizes.
See, the thing is now... seeing as how the poll aint working, folk dont have the ability to vote anonymously, and I have nothing against their desire to do so. BUT, if only 15 to 20 people are going to participate, its not worth the exercise is it. (regardless of wether the poll was working I guess)
The whole thing may die a natural death anyway and Mr Waters and co may end up treading water (albeit lightly) for another 15 years. I dunno. just seems a good opportunity to discuss preferences if it ever came to a "what if" situation.

Re: Poll on Wether to have a discussion on tyre sizes.
I don't see why voting needs to be anonymous. If people are supportive, let them step forward and say so, chances are they are going to comment in the discussion, which negates the need to vote anonymously? perhaps?. Same goes for those not in favour. Ayes and Nays will both be able to put forward their point of view but their usernames will be visible to all who read the thread/discussion.
Anyways, I am in favour.

and i agree, but there are those who will want to have a vote one way or another but who have other interests to protect that may be affected buy those who dont agree with them, hence the desire to stay anonymous. Some will speak up as well.. some will prefer to quietly have a say, and a means of doing that is via poll.
Its not a perfect world...

While I agree with the context of what Mudluva is saying in principle, Fitzy's comments cannot be ignored here, and neither can the views of others who participate in 4wding at a different degree to others. A blanket ruling is a very socialist (at best) and communist (at worst) view to education about use of tyre size (and yes this is political discussion, hence the use of political metaphores).
Stand up for your right to be part of the Democratic system that relies on many and multiple factors and opinions that we believe our country runs on.
I vote Yes, let's get this out is a sensible and mature fashion.

Yes, because of my type of 4 wheeling I dont want to have something placed upon me without being able to if a say, or it would be a NO, as we should be able to run the tyre size we want unless the run organizer or land owner dictate otherwise.

Re: Poll on Wether to have a discussion on tyre sizes.
I sit on the fence. For the most part I have no issue with a max of 33" but as I recall, so not to be hypocritical, I always had 34-35's on my cruiser on trips that had max 33..
Vote me a No.
As its up to a trip leader/organiser to set this rule if they deem applicable for the situation.

Re: Poll on Wether to have a discussion on tyre sizes.
the problem i see in setting a maximum in anything is once a limit is set it just become a administration issue to change the set limit.
lets be a devils advocit here and say that its set a 33" or equivalent metric size, and then a real vocal lad lobbies to have it reduced to say 29" to match his brand new Hilux Suzuki Jeep etc. his argument is just as valid (or invalid) as the chap going for the 33" ruling just a different size, same argument all the same tho.

Re: Poll on Wether to have a discussion on tyre sizes.
My view is that it is a waste of time because there is no way a tire size rule can be enforced without thousands of gates and fences around the country.
The DOC land behind Reefton has so many entry and exit points it would be a massive job to lock it up. The same with the chasm track. Any private person can turn up with a trailer queen on 44s and it is virtually impossible to stop them doing the track regardless of whether there is an authority card or not.
How do you police it ? How do you fence the entire Rakaia river off to stop someone driving up it on 44s
The Dunedin guys use tractor tires at Haast and no one stops them.
As long as big 44s are available and made in the US people will continue to use them.
Cheers Richard

For me No.. leave it to the areas(regions to advise due to different conditions, but you have to ask yourself who tears up the tracks more..guys on 31's trying hard or the guys on 35's just cruising- let alone motorbikes but thats a total different disscussion..)
my 2 cents worth.

yes, as long as people can back up their comments and are not just spouting opinion. evidence makes for a good argument

That is pretty much NZFWDA attitude. It is important that all clubs do what is right for them in the environment they operate in. bad driving practices that damage the environment must be controlled, but how that is done is different for every region , club and trip. For example, the club I belong to has a ban on using Tyre chains, and has done so for many years (because of the damage it can do to the track), however I am aware that there are other clubs that require the carrying of tire chains on every trip. I think that both of these rules are totally reasonable and the correct thing to do. The difference is that each club is in a different environment. I am also aware of a club being formed where most trucks will have a minimum tire size of 40 inch. I am happy with that because they are only intending to do rock crawling. If NZFWDA were to introduce a tire size limit it is likely to drive away the very people we should be encouraging into the organization so that we can teach them reasonable driving behaviour. There are also Unimogs with camper bodies in NZFWDA. I don’t see any problem with them driving the Godly River, which would be banned if we have a tyre size limit, and that is plain stupid. We will be encouraging each club to look at what is right for them, and what they can do to reduce the environmental impact of the sport in their area, not making nationwide rules that are unworkable, and i understand that DoC will do the same. We will not be negotiating with Mr Waters. We exist to provide services and advice to our members, not to assist non members in personal crusades.
Tony Burgess
President NZFWDA
Tony.
Re: Poll on Wether to have a discussion on tyre sizes.
And also what would happen is once a size is set then there will be a debate over tractor lug or slicks.
