Advice on '87 Hilux
Advice on '87 Hilux
Just been to look at an 87 lux, its a 2l non turbo solid axle front ute. Guy is wanting $2500, its got no wof or reg and has a blown gearbox. Just wondering what these are worth going with wof and reg? it should get a wof with new brake pads he reckons. Is abit rough but not overly phased about that.
Also has 2" cab and 4"deck lift.

Re: Advice on '87 Hilux
Have you priced up a replacement g/box? not so easy to come by now days. Also does it have cert for body lift?
Re: Advice on '87 Hilux
Reg on hold? Got RUC current also?
Double/ single cab?
Price varies heaps depending on condition. "abit rough" is expected- its an '87.
But how rough? If its had a hard life then mechanically it could be shagged.
If its been well maintained then it'll last ages.
Why hasn't current owner repaired/replaced gearbox?
and as chops4wd says- will need cert for bodylift to get a wof...

Said hes got a mate with one for a couple of hundred. i thought they used the same box throughout a few different lux models? maybe even surfs, just use a electronic speedo?
Its double cab, reg on hold, 400kms out on ruc. I know about cert for bodylift but tbh 80% of wof places dont even pick up on it
And yeah abit rough, few small dents, i mean its not bad for and 87

2l in a 87? is it not an SR5 or top of the line job, my LN56 85 vintage had a 2.4?

2L being a 2.4 non turbo diesel.
2L-T being a 2.4 litre turbo diesel
3L .... 2.8 litre
5L ... 3 litre diesel.
Bit confusing but the 'L' is the engine designation, such as 1KZ, 3B etc

Dont mean to be rude, but utes are worth more than SUV's, and also being solid front axle make it worth more. I would never own a 2.4 surf.

You are correct bout utes bein worth more - its just the market, dont know if they r right or just gd marketin from crumpy. 400ks around 200, reg on hold unsure of, spending a few hundy on a g? series box to find out the 2l is poked & goin for a wof to discover it will cost a lot more than a set of pads.... priceless.
It may just be a beat up ute out of reg n wof, but as you say in reas con they fetch gd coin, be careful your not getting into a money pit

Re: Advice on '87 Hilux
point taken, solid axle front would be nice.
you could always get it looked at first by a pro so there is no nasty surprises

Re: Advice on '87 Hilux
Im an aprentice mechanic so labour charges free and have the use of our whole workshop, I will get the guy to garantee the 2l is a good runner before buying. The way im looking at it, to get a solid axle ute wof'd and reg'd, id be looking at 4k for a reaaaaallly shit condition one. But i definitely see what you mean, take for a wof and there could be a fair bitta time spent on her
