I think there should be no limit though so your yes no list headings don't really suit. I thought the 'no' list just meant discussion is a waste of time??

I think there are a lot of people who are not reading it right. You are correct Swamped, this poll is just to decide if further discussiion is needed around this subject (not do you support or opose the setting of max tyre sizes).
There is a very good chance that some %@#wad in the future will manage to get a reading to the powers that be and have the rules changed.

Who thought 20 yrs ago that modified vehicles would need a cert, who thought 2 years ago that if you wanted to lift your truck a modest amount that you would need a permit from the NZFWDA. Don't kid yourselfs into believing that this will never happen, as it just might........

There are only 2 types of land in this country. Private and Public

The only land the Government can outlaw big tires on is the Public land so there will always a lot of places to play with big tires for the ones running them.

I don't believe big tires will ever be banned in all the Canterbury rivers.

I don't know why everyone is so worried. :? :? :?

My thoughts are pretty much identical to Roks.
I also didn't really give a toss but when articles start showing in papers and what not that are delivered to my neck of the woods I was a bit annoyed. That straight furrow article has already meant I've been questioned a bit by private property owners I drive on. They've all been sucked into believing that particular point of view without ANY evidence except for "experience".

I think there are people who are reading what they want into the heading, or reading the opinions expressed (and Ive got no issue with opinions, free counrty and all that kinda thing, and TBH I think Tony Burgess has made a very valid comment earlier in the piece) and going along with the sentiment in some of those comments.

As Rok says, its about having a discussion around a potential tyre size debacle. If your stance is already that there needs be no max tyre size, then a simple no covers it.

If you think there's merit in discussing the what ifs that MAY occur in the future, and what we may or may not take as a stance, then put your hand up.

My personal opinion is that I'd fukn abhor any tyre restriction, just as Ive got the shits on about the lift card. Not that it would propably affect me anyway as I dont use DOC land and any farmland I use is by private arrangement where the owners dont give a shit.
BUT, if it were to come to pass, I'd also like folk to have have the chance to put some ideas forward, rather than ranting and raving and beating their chests. I only carried this forward on the behalf of a few folk that were concerned about mumblings they've heard in the background. AND if so called experts are going to try to limit what we can and cant do, have some folk thinking about how to counter arguments on sizes etc.

I know some are titchy about it and want to stamp their feet, why not just cool the heels a bit and see where the numbers go? If the numbers aint there to have a chat about it and take it a little further it aint gunna be likely to happen anyway is it? As it stands at the moment.. 20 folks saying yay isnt really cutting it I wouldnt have thought.

I'd vote yes to discussion as it could affect a lot of people in the future, but I really doubt it could be kept on topic

Re: Poll on Whether to have a discussion on tyre sizes.

Post by SMOKEY »

This thread was headed "whether to have a discussion on tyre sizes" and has already turned into a mature debate :? , good, I fit into the category of haven't got a vehicle and if I ever do again it will be a trailer queen so why give a F--k. Why because 4WD's and property is having a turn at being in the lime light and who knows nothing may ever happen but if it does it's better to fight from the front than be at the rear. No body has suggested we make rules or rulings but be warned this site is being viewed by other interested groups and from an outsiders view we as a group don't and in the eyes of other 4WD communities never have painted a pretty picture, go back years ago and we are the bad guys. Richard ---- who I respect as a mentor for 4WDing in the South Island, you say it may never happen and I hope your right and you will drive on private land, no troubles, but you may have to put your small tyres on to get there. If we have good clean debate maybe some of the groups watching this site may look at things differently.

"TO BE FORWARNED IS TO BE FORARMED,"

I feel this i the guts of the the thread. Me I cldnt give a toss - if only I cld get 33s on the SJ  . But for those in larger vehicles who can fit these tyres / why not? - why should a minority get in the ear of local gvt now (unopposed) and 5 years down the track with their lobbying sneaking through their restrictions on everyone.

Yea, but only because I think theres a few things no-one seems to have thought of as yet.
EG-
*Theres already a limit. (in a way, on public land) 5% bigger than OE and you need cert. You need cert for wof, and wof to be on public land. And are you going to get cert on 44's??
*Limit should be set at 31's- then when tracks get undriveable someone will have to take a dozer through to reopen them- giving access to more people
Put me as as YES to discussion as I'm interested in peoples knowledge.
(but NO there shouldn't be a NZ wide overall limit),

I agree with most of this, change my answer to YES as I would like a say in the discussion.
IMO if you have a cert thats that, the truck is road legal and thats as simple as it should be.

So, a week has passed us by and the people have spoken... democracy in practice.

25 x nay
18 x yay

Even if a debate/discussion were to commence, 18 4x4ers makes a pretty feeble basis of an argument. Sorry, but its true.

NZFWDA have made their position clear on the subject too, and its a position with much merit.

For my part, I respect the numbers and Bow out of the topic.

Good luck all, on whatever side of the fence you're on.
