Electrics & Charging vehicle batteries

Post by wjw »

Okay I've just finished rewiring my secondary fuse box completely, and now have the following:

PRS & AM CB's & Wireless Internet Power Running off 4 terminals all running through one master switch, then I have 2 other terminals, one running my car stereo and amp and the other running a 60Watt rear work light.

I just bought a 750Watt Gennie for work (I only need 65 Watts for backup power) and this genie will supply 8A at 12V, now I was wondering if I could directly connect the gennie to my battery to avoid it going flat.

Any ideas whether this is possible?
If it is, will it charge the battery with any spare current?
Any ideas on what the draw would be from the above and the standard car electrics (with ignition off)

Thanks,

Bill

Hi Bill
If the gennie can provide 8 amps at 12 volts that is 96 watts.
If you then draw 65 watts from that there will be 31 watts left (96-65).
I assume that it has a voltage regulator built in for the 12v, if so should be good to charge a battery.
Have a talk with the supplyer of the gennie, he should be able to advise as to the suitability of battery charging. I am inclined to think that it should be ok.
As to the power draw of the radios, CB and PRS power requirements while in the recieve mode will be minimal (cant remember what exactly, the manuals will have that info).
The stereo can suck a bit of power if it is cranking but the battery should handle that ok for 8 hrs at least (I have run my radio with CB on as well for 10+ no problems, and overnight when i forget to turn it off...oops). If you have the gennie toping up the battery as well then you should be set.
Hope that gives you some ideas.
Cheers
Brett
