kzj78 engine options

Post by hello24 »

disaster this weekend the 1kz has done its head, hoping its just a gasket.... :( the current 1kz has done over 500000ks on the clock so if i were to keep it would prob be looking for a fully reconditioned engine or second hand with low ks but price of these even on trade me make a engine swap to lexus or v6 commodore look very tempting.. i am very interested in the commodore v6 as i have had one in a hilux and lovedit, and the fact that they are so easy to get ahold of so i wouldnt feel as bad thrashing it. have heard some rumours about a bighorn v6 bell housing mateing to the prado auto and commodore v6 if any one has any experience on this would you shed some light on the ins and outs of it?
the lexus seems to be a popular option but dont like the complexity of the engine saying that have been in a couple luxs and they do sound great.
how easy are these conversions? any help much appreciated

with another motor ie commy 1uz etc you have other costs wiring adaptors cert, with a 1kz its just a replacement ...

work out the cost of a rebuild compared with the costs of a converson

stick with the 1kz, rebuild will be worth it. Even new heads are cheap enough now days, Used to be $2500 just for the head, now I think there $1000.

Just been down the road of a commodore v6 into pardo cant use bighorn transfer as pardo has off set rear diff so either have to make adaptor for between gear box/auto and transfer or like i did motor and auto. So running stanted running gear with commmodore v6 in front of pardo auto and 35s goes well bit of trouble sorting ecu's as auto has one .Your welcome to come have a look and a drive to see what you think only difference is mine is a 71 so swb

Just stick with the 1kz. if you want it to last longer, get a more efficient turbo for the boost your running. better the engine you know and all ready set up for...
Just need to remember when you drive it, it aint a lexus v8, its a diesel!

ok have started the install! have chosen an ecotec 3.8 commodore. for the fact that they are so easy to get parts for and are just a bulletproof motor. have motor bolted up to the gearbox with minor mods to the tc to fit the holden flexplate. engine fits in engine bay perfectly using a rodeo ra bellhousing to mate the v6 to the toyota auto. i will be manulising the auto using calvin's instructions and will be getting on with engine mounts some time next week. will upload some photos of the progress.

yeah mate good choice of motor and cheap as chips if you ever need to replace it :D , just be aware they have a shallow mid bowl sump so its really easy to get oil starvation and that all familular knock knock knock noise when your putting the truck through angles or steep hills off road :x Image

What are you doing to adjust for the diff rev range of the petrol as opposed to the diesel.
