Rim width - if you could choose

Hi fellas,

Let's cut to the chase... to avoid popping beads (33x12.5x15 KL71s) would you go to 10" wide rims or as narrow as possible? Few years back had a strange thingy, I got through easy, mates cruiser popped big time. I had the same kumhos on 10" wide, mate's had similar size alloy rims with duellers


I'm about to get new custom rims, so was wondering if I should go wide or narrow(ish) ones to stop popps.

if your not going to beadlock them your probably better off with 8" rims, if you want a wide offset rim like a 10" you can get the centres flipped on some 8s and they'll probably end up sticking out further than a 10" rim does. I changed from 8" to 10" beadlocks a few years ago and usually run my creepies at 8-10 psi or if its not rutted down at 3-4 psi and havent had any problems with inside beads popping off (yet ) and they get a fair hammering at times. Concidering what you spend on your truck and how much tahs etc cost beadlocks usually arent really as expensive as most people seem to think, my first set were $130 per rim and the last 2 sets $150 per rim... thats not very dear when your forking out $400-500 a corner for tahs and beadlock rims last a lot longer than a tah does

Would love to know where you get urs from..? Even now with my own rims around the 175+ mark just to have bead zipped on..

Hi there.....I have a Hilux and have been running the Kuhmo 33 KL71's on 10" rims with a neg 44 offset for a couple of years now. I run them tubeless and they arent beadlocked and I regularly go down to 12-14psi. I have never popped them off the bead. Go for the 10"s I reckon, the tyres look great on them. They are slightly taller on the 8" rim however......

Narrow is what you want. On a 12.5 width tyre a 10" rim is all about aesthetics. If you want useful (without bead locks) go 8" max, I wouldn't be putting 7" out of the question either.

I remember this truck popping 10" beads all day, he even managed to pop both back ones at the same time on one track

yeah, but both those drives you were parked up for most of it.. *fingers*

8's gets my vote.

sadam, similarly i was out with a chap that popped two of his 37 creepys off ten inch rims, both at the same time on the same side, under his shorty nissan.

Don't go for more than 8inch for a 12.5 or 7 inch for an 11.5.

Why ? you can run real low pressures and have a good wide foot print and when the tire leaves the ground the narrow rim opens the tread up and they clear better.

Sorry for the off topic question.... but as its a width offset conversation here goes. Got 30x9.5s on 15x5.5s (413) at the mo and have been thinkin bout whipping up some 25mm spacers but dosnt seem economic, wld like to go to around a 32 and have been weighing up 15x7 or 8 but the -24ish(8's) wont sit them out far enough. My question is by the time I buy new rims (110) and have the centers flipped (60) it will cost a fair dollar, where as I can get the std rims widened for around 450+ to 7.5 and end up with 15x7.5 with -50.8 +-the standard offset. Thoughts?
