Brake Disk Shatter..........

Well I was out taking some pictures at the ellesmere speedway near Leeston today.

I went down to the selywn river to check out the flood damage.

Turned around and came back out on to the gravel road, Heard a clunk then hiss hiss hiss hiss.

Great!! Another puncher! two in 4 days!!


Stopped and this is what I saw......



Turns out when the disk broke apart it sliced the tire valve clean off

I managed to get the 4WD home.

I took a closer look at the broken bits of disk...





I noticed that were it had broken it was nice clean shiny metal

Then I saw most of the break was rusted from being cracked for ages...

Checked my left hand side and found cracks all the way though it.

Interesting.
Several things occurred to me.
How long have you had the vehicle?
Do you think the cracks predate your ownership?
Would driving it really hard, with heavy braking before driving through a puddle, stream etc, would give the disk enough thermal shock as to crack it?
Did you do the same thing this last instance?
Beating the crap outa the disk to get it off the hub for a brake pad change, or wheel brg change?

Seen them worn completely through by the brake pad backing runing on the disk, but this isn't THAT cause.

I have had it about 2 months so far, I never never do heavy braking then hit water.

It looks like old damge too

Bit pissed off with the last WOF it got as I have had to replace most of the bushes all over the 4WD cause they have been so slogged out

I could pull the sway bars left and right with no problem

The rear sway bar bush is 25mm, The rubber one I removed was 31mm cause it was so worn out.

How thick were your discs, they look skimmed in the last 50thou k. I have taken mates discs under the reccomended thickness "on their own head" but if you've been sold your vehicle with them dodgy then you have a case

They are 14mm thick, Scrap thickness is 16mm......... Way way under by any one's standards. Im not worried about chasing the guy I got the 4WD off, New ones are $60 each and I'm just glad it didnt happen when I was going faster.
