So the missus snapped the one and only key in the front door of our 1991 Toyota Hilux Surf .We went to a Toyota dealer and there is no key registered to our vehicle.
Beveridge locksmiths will extract the broken key and replace it for around $100 if it takes him less than 15mins
I was wondering how easy is it to view the number on the barrel of the locking mechanism and how do I get to it?
If its easy enough Ill give it a crack myself, and put the $100 to better use like buying Monteiths Black.
Any help appreciated

100 sounds a good price

This could be the issue.
Starting way off topic if you get a spare key cut from an old one, check it works before you need it. I had one that would start the truck but not unlock it. Great way to learn this was after locking keys in it.
If you can get in its not bad. After having to break in a while ago, next vehicle I will be checking the code at least and maybe getting spare keys cut from it.
My Hilux is 94 so should be similar. Just a case of pulling the door panel and (from memory) there is a wee rod with a clip on it attached to a lever on the back, and a circlip (or something... its been a while) holding the lock in place. Pop that and read the the code (mine is now written on the inside of the door and the company electro-pencilled it on the key)
It may be possible to push the key out from the back or if you are not overly fond of your passengers door lock they swap (I took this option after busting something on the lock being a rough bastard. Think there is another circlip too swap). To get the keys cut from code was $35 for 2.
Sorry for the vague answer but its been a while. Hope it helps.
Re: Key snapped in door lock
Whip the lock off, and take it into him?
Might make it a bit cheaper ?

To Boon or not to Boon.
Re: Key snapped in door lock
Im guessing you havnt broken into it yet? not too hard, probably a video or two on Youtube. But get a wedge of wood, and a bar/long screwdriver. Jimmy the top of the door frame open a bit, jam the wedge of wood in to hold it open enough to get the coathanger etc onto the lock or doorhandle. Take the screws out from arm rest on the door and door handle, pull the trim off. The rod that goes to the lock should just slide off sideways then pull rod from lock. Get a screwdriver or pliers if you can and pull the retainer clip out that holds the lock in. Terrible explansion(and spelling) take it to the dude and itll be alot cheaper.
good luck.
good luck.

Re: Key snapped in door lock
get a piece of metal strapping about 500 mm long file a hook into the end of it.
Slide it down between the glass and the exterior door seal with the hook facing the door lock, move it right to left(drivers door) moving it up and down until it snags the rod that connects the barrel to the door latch mechanism.
lift up. may take a few goes
Once unlocked remove the door card and disconnect the plastic clip that holds the rod to the barrel in the door.
with a long nose pair of pliers remove the flat steel clip that holds the barrel against the panel steel of the door.
remove the barrel and tap it up side down till the broken key comes out.
While the barrel is out get the number of the side of it.

Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.
Re: Key snapped in door lock
On your 130 Surf it is even easier once you have the door card off, you remove the two metal activator rods, one for the lock, one for latch/opening mechanism, then there are two small nuts you remove and the whole plastic door handle comes out, from there it is just a metal wire clip and the lock comes out, You should be able to get the old key out using a fine screwdriver. then just take the lock to your locksmith and they can cut a new key from the number on the lock.
easy.
Probably take you 30 minutes if you haven't done it before

Cheers Guys
I dont think getting in will be a problem.
I found a step by step guide online for getting the panel off from the inside, complete with a tools list.
Thanks all for the tips
