Had enough of breaking trailer tail lights.

Post by pruggerdore »

trailer as with most has taillight mounted on very back corners. very vulnerable. so wondering what the legal requirement is. how far from the back of trailer is legal maximum ? would protect them alot if they can be moved 300mm up the side of trailer. Anyone know? thanks

They need to be able to be seen on an angle 45deg inboard, so does depend on individual trailer and mounting.

I solved this problem on the work trailer and mine by making up a removeable light board similar to a boat trailer and on the other I made some protective frames out of 3mm angle with a bolt over guard made out of some flat bar and 8mm rod

I have an elite trailer and they seem to make the lenses out of tissue paper. They break at the slightest tap (bumped one with wheelbarrow and it disintegrated) and are only available from the manufacturers.

I have a set of std hella ones (shouldve grabed an LED set) that will be fitted when I have time so I never have to be at the mercy of Elite (they are never open when I need a replacement (like wof time on the weekends).

Might have to see if I can get some bars/mesh fitted (landrover esq to protect them).

was thinking of doing similar on my trailer as mine are way forward on the guards. there should be a lighting rule factsheet on the ltnz website if you manage to be able to navigate it. it's a prick of a site. lol.
