Im looking at importing these and has a couple of questions;
http://www.jimnybits.co.uk/shop/grand-v ... d_285.html
I’ve heard stories from people saying that the spring mechanism makes a loud clicking noise while driving, is this the case ?
Any reason why i couldnt/shouldnt fit this to my daily driver ?
Thoughts on Diff Lock ?
Re: Thoughts on Diff Lock ?
They should be all good, i heard that they can increase mileage if driven right, power going to both wheels and all. the clunking you will probably only feel/hear on full lock. you will notice a huge difference with them if its feessable would probably be worth it
Re: Thoughts on Diff Lock ?
lockrights are ok.
in the rear on a daily its a little interesting. it depends a bit if you have passengers etc.
i don't get any clicking in the surf.
driving, you have to coast on the corners. putting power down makes the diff lock which makes it suddenly understeer. hitting the gas on a tight corner makes it suddenly lock in with a big clunk and shake the hell out of the rear. not great if you have kids in the back (puke!).
uphill corners are a curse as you need power on which makes the diff lock.
for a nice daily limited slip is preferred.
however i find the autolocker great on gravel roads.

Re: Thoughts on Diff Lock ?
I have a lockright (just installed) and im about to replace it .... to much for a daily driver "im a little soft"
ha ha. Works great and made a massive difference off road but on road it can catch you out (My kids loved it). If any one wants a brand new Lockright installed into a 91 Virata diff (Rear diff and locker package) Make an offer as its coming out with less than 150 kms under its belt. At the same time the diff was fully serviced and overhauled by Steelie Gears with the total package costing over $1500 plus diff.

Re: Thoughts on Diff Lock ?
Lockrights are awesome cheap traction for Offroad work, but they can be 'interesting' when cornering on a hard surface. Especially bad in a light weight short wheelbase truck when powering thru a sharp corner. My old samurai would either step sideways or give a sharp cluk and jolt if you gassed it on a roundabout.
They seem to work better on road in a heavier long wheelbase truck.
Offroad they are cheap traction - you just gotta learn how to live with them I the road.

Thanks for all the replys, its helped... what im hearing is that they make a huge difference offroad, but are not practical for a daily driver.

That sums it up I recently installed one luckily I don't daily drive it, just driving to the mud parks enough... Takes some getting used to. If I was to do it again I'd go air locker
Re: Thoughts on Diff Lock ?
ive got one in my samurai! the diff makes all sorts of horrible sounds if someone who doesn't know the car drives it but once you get use to coasting corners its not to bad. big asset off road! although its annoying i would put one in my next vehicle. cheers Mike.
Re: Thoughts on Diff Lock ?
i don't know what it would be like in a light short wheel base.
one other thing i forgot is you have to make sure tires are even. because your driving on road with a locked diff, if one wheel is slightly smaller (lower air pressure) it makes it want to turn all the time instead of going straight.
for me i got sick of open diff for on road (ie air locker) so i'm happy with the trade off.

Re: Thoughts on Diff Lock ?
ive heard that replacing diff oil with quality oil and on a regular basis helps to eliminate the clunking and clicking
Re: Thoughts on Diff Lock ?
Had a mate with a lockright in the rear of his Vitara. Made a few noises when cornering on and off road.
He ended up pulling it out .........

Re: Thoughts on Diff Lock ?
if they are setup up correctly and shimed to the right clearance , a lockrite should only make a light clicking sound when tight cornering . and an occasional bang to release drivetrain wind up .
Running heaver 85/140 oil helps alot too.
If you drive your truck like a truck and not like a car , they are fine for a daily driver.

x2
got em front & rear in my ln65 - i have no issues of them being scary - mind you the 3l in the lux is pretty gutless
every now and then you get a loud bang or clunk. On full lock you can get a light click click sound (much like a cv that sounds knackered) coming from the diff
mine isnt a daily driver (more like weekly) but is probably 80% on road 20% off.. and gets used to tow a caravan.. I had the lockrites professional installed in to the diff - i just took the diffs out and in to the shop and picked up the next day and put back in the truck
made a huge difference off road - would be the first mod (other than tyres) id do to a new 4wd
