2.8D Toyota Hilux Double-Cab (ln106) - Loud knocking noise

Post by KZN185 »

Hey guys, went hunting this weekend and coming back down the hill my truck developed a gradual knock (increasing with rev's) that developed to a LOUD knock. Temp didn't rise in oil or water, lost power, black smoke.

Had to drive it down to the farm homestead then got a mate to bring a car transporter trailer to take me the rest of the way home.

Truck wont idle, sounds like a tractor. Will get it to a diesel mechanic tomorrow.

Expecting the worst, hoping for the best. Worst being new engine, best being blocked injectors for instance.

Anyone else had a similar experience?

Yep same problem happened to two of mine (My guess anyway).
Run low on oil and head down a steep track they will run a big end shell(Usually #4)
As they are an interferance motor this allows the piston to hit the valves :!:
New Motor time
Outta the way sheep shagga !!!!

Had an oil change about 3 months ago so i cant imagine it would be low on oil.

If the pistons were hitting the valves, would the engine run at all? What happened to yours when you experienced the same issue? Did it run after?

Yea it started out with a small tapping noise then progressed to a hammering after about 20 km's.
Yes the engine will still run (but not very well)
Hope it's not the same in yours, but it sounds like it :(

I've experienced the same thing in the past with a 3.5 pajero (truck had only done 110k's according to the odo!!) and as above, run a big end bearing - plenty of oil, no oil pressure..... new motor time :(

You haven't checked the oil in 3 months? How do you know its not low on oil then?
