What recovery gear do you carry on hardcore trips????
Thought it would be interesting too see how much stuff ropes, winch's clever ideas special tools. people carry too be prepared for anything as far as recovery goes. not tools and spares. doing a separate thread for that. list everything not just generalisation grouping .. vehicle too which will explain winch type and how you manage too stow it. and your target trip type
Hilux . as hard a trips as can find. no limits.
Rear mount electric winch pulls forward and backwards. 80 amp alternator. 3 batterys
turfor hand winch as back up with 20 metre cable.
3 pully blocks.
4 shackels
2 metre, 3 metre 4metre 10 metre tree protectors also used as winch extensions. 5 metre winch extension.
spade. 2 wooden rope joiners.
9 metre snatch rope.
a growing list with ground anchor next too get
list growin all the time with ground anchor top of the list too get

bow saw - doesn't leak like chain saw starts every time, doesn't take much space as packs flat.

Hi-lift, under-rated in a lot of ways me thinks...
and these are handy, I carry 2

To use winch at full pulling capacity, cable has to be out so down to the 1st layer on the drum, use one of these to 'hook off' where needed. Hope that makes sense. With extra cable, can use 2 with Hi-lift to 'winch'

If you break it... build it stronger.

welding leads, cheap welding helmet and 2.5 rods along with 2 sets of heavy duty jumper leads.
If carrying a Hi-lift, (and you should) you may as well have a chain kit for winching with it (can be very handy for side pulls and putting rigs right side up in tight situations).
Our spares always included some tube to make up drive shafts if required, random bits of steel for gluing shit back together is required, good selection of nuts and bolts etc, diff heads, axles, springs (the heavy stuff was spread over the trucks on a trip). May seem excessive, but we have been into country that has never had wheels touch it before, had some goodly breakdowns or breaks, and never left a truck behind.
(ask Tom about it! I think he still holds the record for the best......holdup on a trip
)

Got to have a high lift jack with a winching kit and the chain attacxhment that goes on to the foot and then hooks on to a wheel rim they are great you can lift each corner 2-3 feet of the ground depending on what length jack you have

These would make a great addition to the turfor winch. the purpose of the thread too me right there. where can you buy them???
carry a high lift and have used it too winch. found it a bit lacking so the turfor came into existence.

I got some here will send a pm latter

Do they damage the cable at all? Would imagine due to it camming against it that it may become real flat and kinked in the spots its used? They make a similar thing to use on rope so you might be able to use it or one similar with amsteel?

in a perfect world where the cable level winds like on a crane set up yes the grabs will leave a slight imprint
but on a 4x4 winch set up it is nothing compared to when you winch over a "soft layer" or when the rope bunches up and then drops down off the edge crushing the lower sections of rope
they are a piece of brilliant kit if using wire rope.
and once you start using them you will wonder what you did before when you didnt have them
a std situation is when you have a lot of rope wind around the bars and the next winch is a little short winch. before hand you would have to winch the complete rope on which will mean its not on tight then start winching in hard to recover yourself thus pulling the rope down into the lower layers.
now with the grabber pull all the rope off the bar chuck the excess behind the tree/ winching point apply the grabber, pull the rope tight and now start winching the rope on the drum is nice and tight so the new rope feeding on layers on top as it should.
once done remove the grabber and wind the excess rope back around the bar and carry on to the next hole
a bit long winded, but hopefully you get the basic idea.
same thing when using a extension rope, it will always be the right length

Re: What recovery gear do you carry on hardcore trips????
got quite a pile of shit and I know theres still a lot more stuff floating around the shed, I dont take it all with me but I've usually got a fair bit of winching stuff, snatchblocks, treetrunk protectors, extns etc coz most places around here seem to involve lots of winching and its a pain in the arse when you havent got enough bits to make things easy

When big rivers are very marginal (3 to 4ft, in water you can't walk) we use a 50 meter rope so the first truck can test the crossing while others remain on dry land

Do not use these on a tirfor or similar winch. They use a special cable which is easily damaged by these clips and the cable will not go through the jaws of the winch.
Found this out the hard way .........
