Been working on it but its been just lots of little bits here that arn't worth posting... relocating suspension mounts boxing bits in etc

Got these the other day
Image
Spent last night drilling and tapping... the laser cut holes were the worst  normally I cut them larger got them cut at .25mm over size but the slight tracking curve of the laser as it cuts ment I had to drill them to get the bolts through chewed up 2 drill bits doing it

I'm setting them up to weld onto the outside of the rim with some bits to be welded on and machined to fit.... just doing things a bit different because I can

Different but the same way I'm doing mine    Seems like alot of extra effort to split the rim 8)

you should gone for 1 mm oversize for clearance on the bolts, it look like you had to drill the hole for tapping thru? in the past i have got them laser cut to tapping size and used a gun tap with loads of cutting compound, and tapped with out pre-drilling with no problems, also if you do drill out the laser/plasma holes, drop drill speed to damn slow and also take the edge off the drill like you were to drill brass, chews thru no problems then!! but you probably already know this

yeah but it makes it a load easier to get tire and off with out having to force it over the original bead.

you were half way there with a jig, you shoulda set your slitting disk up and turned the rim to cut the bead off , or set a a plasma cutter torch up fired the arc and spun the rim

 less effort.... I'm way off this and price the I'm at around $600 in laser profiles and materails so I'm not far off the trademe price for a set  but they will be mine... Tom if your doing the same  don't .... too much work profile the spacer ring  way better idea come monday I"ll be talking to the profile cutter about what the thin'st they can cut with the laser in 10mm if I do them again thats what I"ll do.... too much work doing it with bits of tube

was hopeing to post up some pic's of a finished rim but spent the day drinking with a neibour so didn't achieve anything  maybee monday

Haa should known yours would be tricky
Yeah my spacer ring is profile cut, 16mm spacer to suit my Crawlers which have a 19mm thick bead. I've had the spacer ring cut as 4 pieces to save on materials. Hopefully I can get it to seal

Must be getting old  took a bit to get over sat
Here is a bit of sober "tricky"

The Jig in action
Image
with the tube welded to the spacer straping, decided to machine it flat before welding to the clamp plate
Image
Clamped to limit warpage.... makes it a bit difficult to weld tho
Image
And the result......
Image
Now all I have to do is machine and balance  did I mention alot of work

A wee update for the lada
Rims have been re-centered, mounting plate has been welded on and they've all been balanced.... just got to make up a mount for the lathe so I can mount them on the face plate and I can machine the clamp rings

Got the front axle bump stop pads done and   wasn't happy, they made things very tight fitting the body mount of the panhard between the tie-rod and the coilover, they were also heavy and on top of all that didn't look right
so decided to change things.... cut the mounts off
then did this to the steering arms
Image
This is so I can fit some old rear wheel bearings on there
Image
there is a grub screw on a tapered thread in the middle to lock the bearing on
Image
Bump stop pads  this is part of what gives me up travel

A small update

With the changes to the suspension I've had to redo the links, because the bottom links are longer (more leverage if I land on them...) I've made them from NB32 astm sch 80
Image
All done ready for the truck.... the skinny one is for the top link no chance of it getting hit so I've kept it lighter

You get welding consumerables cheaper than the rest of us?
Wish I had a bigger lathe  If I did I'd get the outer rings laser cut from 25mm plate and machine the bead into it, drill the 36 m8 holes, paint, done.

Always watching your work with interest fella. 8)

 I gave up trying to work out cost in welding consumables..... it does get a bit nuts when I'm working on the digger laying down inch wide spray welds melting 20mm plate!!
Nice as it would be to cut clamp rings out of 25mm, cost would be nuts, got some smaller size rings cut for the digger @ $90 each so I'd be surprised if I got any change from $500 for the 5 rings

A wee update (this might interest ya Tom, decided to build some monoque bits...)

Got the Lower link mounts partially done (got to drop the motor again to finish them)... this means the axle is placed so I can start the guards

The wheels going to articulate up to the base of the bonnet so the inner guards needed rebuilding.... easiest way is remove them all together and build some new ones
Image
I'm going to double skin the inner guard and turn it into a monoque structure to replace the strength lost to trimming the chassis fold out, I'm also going to use it to support the bumpstops and the panhard body mount
Here's what I've done on the passenger side
Used CAD to design everything... some bits are as little as 10mm clearance to moving bits so.... fingers x'd I get every thing in the right place
First cut most of what is getting cut out of the inner guard, then added profile base coming out to the side
Image
Finished the inner skin and the brace for the bumpstop
Image
That is the bumpstop sticking down the bottom of the frame, just sitting there at the moment so I could mark it for welding later with the axle removed
Here is a shot from inside showing the clearance for the coil over and the panhard bar
Image
And the finished section with the outer skin on and the tie-in pieces to the old chassis folds
Image
Had some fun trying to weld the base of the tie-in's as it was to a seam.... I don't know what the Russians use as seam sealer but its bloody hard to weld through.... the moment penetration goes through a layer of sheet metal it stops the weld flowing..... had to burn a pass to get the stuff out and then grind and weld properly

Working on the other side, this needs to be alot stronger as I've got the steering box and panhard mounts

Hey.... its still a lada, if the americans can build a zuk with a full tube chassis danna 60's front and rear, ford 429 motor etc and still call it a zuk because they still have a dove tailed bonnet and half a grill from the original zuk
If I beat someone I want to be able to say "you got beat by a Lada...."

Got a bit done last night before mates turned up and distracted me
Drivers inner guard
Image
because this has the steering box and the panhard mounts (sticking down the bottom) I've built extra weight and structure into this side, the base is cut from 4mm with a folded step for strength I've also run a strip up to the gusset and added the gusset also done in 4mm then the transition pieces from the original chassis fold to the new piece are also 4mm, panhard mounts are 6mm
I'm working hard to get enough strength to survive trials... but keeping weight down ....... time will tell

Here it is all covered up
Image

Make up the panhard, drop and motor and finish off the body side of the link mounts and can mount it up and cycle everything with a wheel on and work out the new trim line for the outer guard.....

Want the toy done  I need a toy to play with and I want the floor space for a mates project  you know how it goes

Oh had a couple of hrs in the shed yesterday, didn't feel like working on the truck so set up one of the beadlock clamp rings in the lathe.... found they just fit on the 4 jaw chuck I have about 2 turns of thread left on all the jaws... its workable but because it is so far out I'm getting harmonic's that make the ring vibrate  so I have to run a high feed rate  not so good for the finish.... nothing a flap disk won't fix

Good of you to offer to help there Mac

Still haven't finished the link mounts on the body.... just got to remount the motor/trans with this in place I can make the bits that tie the top link to the engine mount to bottom link.... I want to do this with the motor in place as I've had the mounts move from weld warpage so I've cut the old drivers side engine mount off. made all the link mounts and will take the engine mount back in place with the bits to join it between the link mounts..... been putting this off as my back is a bit delicate at the moment and moving 1/4 of a ton of motor & trans isn't something I want to do by my self.... waiting for some friends to turn up

So I pulled out the plasma cutter and clearanced the front guards.... dropped the far side of the axle down to the ground and jacked this side up till it hit the guard
Image
This is nowhere near the max articulation.... at the outside of the tyre there will be 700mm of articulation.... but this (roughly about 400mm of articulation) will get me close enough for the rough cut... the final cut will be set by the shape of the new guard lips I'm getting from Gee Motors
Image
Image
Image
Image
Back will be done to match the shape of the front so it looks even
I'm clearancing the guards a bit further than on a ladder chassis as I'm expecting more twist and movement due to Uni-body design

Had a good day in the shed..... got a heap of little bits n pieces done on the truck.. like panneling the headlight holes etc

Gareth rocked up and gave me a hand to fit the motor so I got the motor mounts and link mounts finished
Image
Image
Drivers side includes top link mount, engine mount and bottom link mount

Also sorted the front engine mount and added some braces up to the shock brace
Image

Little bit of luck the steering box will turn up this week so I can sort the steering.... a bit closer to finished

Didn't get much done today got distracted

Got a bit added at the rear of the trans tunnel, there is a hollow at the end of the tunnel where the fuel tank sits so I've made a brace that bolts between the rear suspension mounts and the end of the tunnel, this will strengthen the body a bit more
Image

Started to mount the drivers seat.... I bought a pair of racepro seats a while back, and I will never deal with them again and I'd recommend anyone after seats don't waste your time.... it took over 6 months for them to deliver & they got the colour wrong, I was just happy to get them so I took them
Unfortunately my ass has gotten bigger since I ordered them.... so I had to spread them a little, so I stripped the seats.... this is when I discovered how crap there workmanship was the glass work had air bubbles one seat was woven mat the other loose strand... whats up with that ?? both seats had edges that were delamiated
Now stack that up with a price that is over twice what I picked up a pair of Chinese made seats and they are better made

Right I'm cheap, I've got em so I'm going to fix em started with the glass work started by spreading the seat
Image
Grind the edges down
Image
Started layering the glass
Image
5 layers later, all done
Instead of using the original foam I decided to use snow foam to stop it soaking up wet.....
Image
After alot of blue dust from grinding snow foam I pulled the cover back over and glued it all down

Yesterdays efforts
Decided to put the drivers seat in, so I can start sorting the controls and engine cover
Image
That was the easy bit the inside bit got a bit tight when I put the belt anchor in so I decided to extend mount back
Image
What you can't see is how tight this is  the foot well is only slightly bigger than my feet so left foot braking, and the seat has been angled to push my shoulders inside the cage

Got the trans shifter modified too, the handle was way too long and while I was playing with this I decided to modify the gate so I can slam it into reverse without having to push the shift button
the red arrow is pointing at the bit of the gate I had to remove
Image
Here it is gate filed and handle shortened by 100mm

Trimmed more bits off the shifter body before I got it mounted, also made up a steering column.... started with a UJ spline from a range-rover... extended it using some 3/4" 4130 rod sleaved that into some tube I salvaged from a panhard bar off a car (just happened to be the right size...) then the other end I sleaved the top section off the lada steering column, some plastic bushes I had lying round and all done
Image
Some thing you can't see from the pix is the angles things are on.... I've been driving skidders and bully in the bush too long  seat is on an angle out and the steering wheel is on an opposite angle.... but I find it cumfy
Also got the harness bar in the cage as well as well as patched some more holes in the body and sills (stop mud getting in..)

Picked up another lada from Gee Motors....
Image
Going to cut the guards off this one and expand them out to suit my truck.... also grabbing some other bits and pieces
Then return it to them.... all for free :D :D :D
