XJ Cherokee Noise

Post by Want2Retire »

For Sale: 1X beautiful grinding noise from the front end of a '95 Cherokee. You will not find a better noise anywhere. Benefits of this noise include the fact it only appears when in 4WD (be it 4hi or 4lo) and best of all, the noise automatically increases in frequency along with speed and never when you're slowing down...no more distracting noises when coasting to a stop...except for the wife :?

But wait there's more..
Buy this noise in the next 10mins, and we'll chuck in a free dashboard squeak that is sure to annoy the living crap out of you.

Don't wait, once this noise is gone....it will be replaced with another no doubt, it is a Jeep afterall 8)

Sounds like you have a case of angry sparrows.

They normally hide inside the centering ball on your front drive shaft's double cardan joint.

Cheers TJ and Yeti.
I am hoping to get the front driveshaft off this weekend. Looking after the young fella while the wife is taking our daughter to two birthday parties this weekend though.

You know what it's like when a bunch of women get together... :? :?

The noise sounds like a rythemic "rubbing" that only appears when accelerating in 4wd. In 2wd there is no noise at all. When lifting off the gas, the noise disappears. Will see what happens when driveshaft removed.

Well, finally removed front driveshaft but those u-joints would not budge, not even with my biggest BFH. Anyway, took driveshaft to a workshop specialising in drivelines and minutes later two u-joints sitting in my hand.

Once home inserted new u-joints, put driveshaft back in and noise is gone :D Yay

Thanks everyone who helped point me in the right direction.
