Any one got any information on the Hanmer River?
Looking to head up there soon but just want to be aware of any issues and get an idea of the track/river conditions of late.
Hanmer River
the river track its self is very easy.. beware if you venture up the gully on the left hand side not to go too far up as it becomes very soft and hard to turn around at the top
there is also a fence across the river about 5 k's up stream too if i remeber righty not sure if your allowed across it .

Bit more info for you guys on this route.
Have found out that from the Hossack road entrance upstream is actually private lease. Spoke to one of the joint owners and they are happy to let folk up as far as the Hossack station if they contact them first but they are locking a gate from there up. Downstream from the Hossack road entrance is public but a bit more ruggard - not recommended to do alone.
Sibly's book apparently in error on this route

Went up Hanmer on Sunday with 3 Toyotas (pretty much shineys with some adventure).
Not really worth getting the permission to head up the Hossack. the locked gate is just after boundry stream (for those of you that have Sibly's book). Its a fairly good track but typical of any river bed you can access without permission.
We decided to head down river to the main road but encounted a fence we couldn't cross without too much effort. (I think it must be the Hossack lease boundary - if you want to do the lower end of the river go straight into the river bed and don't turn left to the Hossack gate when coming from Hanmer, that way you won't need permission either.)
We headed back to Hanmer then took the Jollies pass road. Near the base there are some neat parallel tracks beside the road.
Don't get caught by suprise like I did on the steep one, did get up on second attempt - not recommended for shineys who are protecting their paint too much - we did no damage as the broom has young soft growth at the moment.
Not much other adventure except a whole bunch of trail bikes - the leader of which slid towards us on our side of the road.
Some interesting playgrounds up top - the other two were testing out the diff lock vs no diff lock on a couple of slopes and then took off up a pylon track into the clouds.
Took a few detours on the way back - main one was coming up the Kowhai from highway one to Marshmans road (we live on Marshmans so have to get inland some way or another). River has plenty of soft shingle but causes no dramas unless you divert.
(note the nice smooth track in back ground)
Pulled him out and carried on only to loose him round the back of the bushes and dragged him out again.
We never needed his assistance as we got our selves off a bank we were hung on with man power before he could get in position (actually he was busy taking photos but we were too quick for him to do that too).
One patch in particulay is pretty soft in a long stretch of water, we were paddling in the shingle more than driving through - there is a detour around it at present.
Came across a huge bunch of other 4x4s (about 10-15) heading down river - looked like shineys - even had a young girl with L plates in one - good on her.
