In-tank fuel pump into non-EFI tank
In-tank fuel pump into non-EFI tank
Just after some opinions and idea on how other people have gone about this.
When fitting an intank pump into a diesel or carby fuel tank, how have you gone about running and sealing up the wires into the tank?
I know I could swap to an EFI tank, or use a surge tank and external pump, but I am looking at the simplest cheapest option here its running far from a high power engine
Cheers,
Clive

Re: In-tank fuel pump into non-EFI tank
i done a external pump with mine. found it simple as. cut hose, put pump in and wire. be easier than fitting a internal pump. i havent had any fuel issues with the v8 yet but if i do then will fit an internal in the tank.

Re: In-tank fuel pump into non-EFI tank
Just read plenty of issues running an external without a facet type lift pump and surge tank as they are not designed to dry run and 'suck' fuel up from the tank and tend to be noisy or die early. But still, we are talking a dirty old 4Y-E engine here, so hence any old $20 in-tank pump I can raid from any old toyota at pick-a-part will do the trick

Re: In-tank fuel pump into non-EFI tank
I've got an old hilux tank here that has had an EFI pump fitted, The pump is gone (into the custom tank in my lux)
It's free to a good home if you want it, just have to find a pump and you will be good to go.

Re: In-tank fuel pump into non-EFI tank
a diesel is easy use an inline pump an leave the tank alone
Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.
Re: In-tank fuel pump into non-EFI tank
have a look on patrol4x4 forum. someone fitted an intake pump on a diesel. fitting the pump is easy enough its the wiring through the top that of interest.
Re: In-tank fuel pump into non-EFI tank
By the time you buy in line pump and fk round, just get the efi tank that bolts in................. they cant cost that much more

'Drift Spec'... The new "Half Assed"

Re: In-tank fuel pump into non-EFI tank
Right.. after finally getting around to it and pulling an all nighter removing all the carby gear, fitting up the EFI setup and wiring everything.. this morning I drop the tank to fit the pump and this is where it gets frustrating, the tank cap is nowhere near big enough to fit the intank pump thru the hole! So there goes that idea and now I'm stuck with a truck with no fuel supply. DOH
.
So does anyone have a spare inline pump laying around, know what I could get one off for cheap, or have any other brilliant ideas much appreciated
Cheers,
(a very frustrated) Clive

Had a similiar problem fitting a supra intank pump into a lj71 diesel prado tank. Dont know what your tank looks like but for me I had to remove the swage that comes up through the inside of the bolt up flange for the lid to give the extra diametre for the pump to fit through. I used a rotary burr, then flushed tank out afterwards. Because I had then removed the swage, fuel in theory could then leak out under the flange plate so I jb welded around that. I cut the pickup tube and fitted the pump inline, used viton grommets I found at work for wiring and it worked a treat, nice tidy job. Alot of shagging about though.

Either the supra pump is a bit smaller than a skyline one or your tank hole was a fraction bigger. I could get just the pump in that way, but no room to get return pipe and a clamp thru as well unless I cutout a nick between 2 of the bolt holes aswell. Might be a good last resort option tho thanks for that. Knew I should've brought a tube of cold-weld when supercheap had thier 25% off sale lol

What about this on trade me.Listing # 550212875
Re: In-tank fuel pump into non-EFI tank
Surf tank doesnt fit I think they run across the back of the truck instead of lengthways under the drivers side like a hilux one, LN61 tank would but doubt theres many EFI ones of those laying around unused. But I think I have found a solution for anyone else interested, Suzuki Vitara/Escudo/Swift etc pump is only 38mm diameter so should just squeeze in the hole with the return tube. Apparently flows enough for a lexus so should do the job, now to find one.

you don't touch the tank, you leave the pick up and fuel gauge alone and install a inline fuel pump just out side the fuel tank.
we used a Bosch inline pump from a V8 VL commodore to feed the Rb30det in my hilux no issues.
The reason? these older style pumps can run dry and not damage themselves like in tank pumps and they are cheap as chips from any holden/nissan wrecker.
to power them just wire via a relay to the ON position of the ignition. you can also put in a seperate fuel cut off switch somewhere in the passenger compartment as part of a anti theft system
