Post by BlakeJ »

Righto I thought i Would start up an actual build thread for my samurai. My names Blake and im a student down here at canterbury university. I brought my wee samurai at the start of 2012 and have recently decided to take it off the road and do a few mods. Here she goes....

After purchasing the wee jem i was pretty quick to figure out she had a bit of a dodgy past, as she came from a dodgy seller. it had two different diff ratios in it, they had slapped a jimny diff head in the back, so that was the first thing to fix. i thought i would pull the whole housings off and underseal it and do a bit of rust repair and general tidy up

Image

Image

Then after going away in it for new years I finally decided the 1300 had to go, as she is going to be my daily driver and i wanted a bit of power, not a lot, just a bit. thats where this showed up....

Image

Got it for a steal at $400, wasnt running when i brought it and it turned out to be the ECU wasn't sending signal to the fuel pump. Nothing a few wires and a relay wont fix. Oh and its a G16a 16v EFI

was still home up north for the uni holidays when i stripped the escudo so i took over the parentals garage for a bit
Image

out she came, and with a bit of a tidy up looked just like a brought one

Back down in christchurch for uni now and have finally decided to slide the zook into the shed and start the transplant. In a day with the help of Tu's and Sam we had the 1600 sitting in nicely. Thanks heaps to BenT for your conversion kits, they are a lifesaver and you are a god
Image

Ive got the Airbox all mounted up now just waiting for the reducer to arive to get it pulmbed up
Image

After some nervous welding at my flatmates work ive got the in tank fuel pump in the sammy tank. Decided it was too much work modifying the escudo tank to go in. there is no baffle so i may run into some issues in the future but nothing a surge pump or full tank of gas wont fix
[img]http://i1153.photobucket.com/albums/p506/blakesammy/P1060903.jpg[img]

The seats in these things are uncomfortable as hell, i dont even think they are original sammy seats but look like ones out of a coily for some weird reason. so out the went and in went some recaro fishnets, really easy to match to sammy rails just used a bit of boxsection on each side to raise them up a bit. Also added a smaller steering wheel as it now has power steer and oil pres, volt and temp guages

clutch was slipping like a bitch so got a new standard one and had the flywheel resurfaced. thought while i was at it i would drain the very dirty looking gearbox oil and give it a birthday with some fancy redline synthetic oil

Went to pickapart w while ago and got some lwb escudo calipers to beef up the front braking a bit, will be using the standard calipers on the rear to get rid of the drums. While i was at it got some new rotors and pads and gave them a coat of jam

One question, if you are using the standard front calipers on the rear, what will you do for a handbrake?

i have spare 413 transfer case with drum that im currently turning into a rocklobster, i will get the front half of a 413 rear driveshaft to match the flanges and use that. got a mate with the dxf files for the caliper mounts so wont need to buy any expensive kits to do it

Just the calipers and disc rotors. They can be a bit interesting to bleed apparently, you might need to unbolt them to do it I think? Oh, and the LWB brakes are the ones you want, as they are bigger and the disc rotors are vented.

so if someone was making up some rear caliper mounts.... a 45deg tool wld be fine in place of the bearing retainer radius? as long as the bearing OD is retained in the same place? Which without measuring is more or less flush with the flange face? :|.

Thought about makin / gettin made some 1mm dirt seals for the lower part of "the other kit" to keep crap out of the seals... as the idea is they are change able without doin bearings but if your changing an axle, its either cos the bearings stuffed or the axles snapped.

Ideas/input

I have thought about that before as well, it would be an awesome idea to have a seperate seal that you can change, would suit me cos of all the mud I play in
