1jz motor troubles

Post by 1jzsurf »

Hi guys i have just replaced the motor in my surf (1jz) with a second hand one and started her up for the first time it took awhile as she didnt want to budge was like the injectors were stuck anyway she freed up but something is still not right i am losing water and have noticed a fair amount of water coming out of the exaust and it seems to get quite hot fast i opened the cap to see if the water was flowing through and noticed abit of throf in there my thoughts were cracked head or gasket there is.no white oil its still quite clear i opened the top oil cap and there is a little bit of white oil but could it just be some condensation in the motor for sitting around for awhile it also started pulsing every now and then like it was missing or something im positive i put everythimg back right any ideas? Im not a mechanic so it has me buggered

cheers nathan

i think your first guess was probably right, sounds like a blown head gasket or block issues

Could be an air bubble (prolly not, but cant hurt to check). Vent it at its highest point (may now be heater hoses if you`ve done something tricky) and let it idle till the bubling stops.

Failing that its likely head/gasket problems :(

Hey mate,

give it a compression test and see what its like, but as the others say it does sound like a head gasket or a cracked head :(

Also it depends on where the internal leak is to whether it will get water into the oil.
You could also pressurise the cooling system and see how quickly it drops pressure (it will drop some pressure even if its ok just due to being a cold engine and tolerances and stuff) just make sure you turn it over with the spark plugs out before starting in case water has entered the cylinders.

On another note is it a twin turbo 1jz-gte? If so it might be my old truck

Yeah that is my old truck, what happened to the first engine??
the guy I bought it off did the conversion but he made a bit of a hash of it, hopefully you managed to get on top of the bugs it had

Oil pressure is 90 when first start her up and 30 at idle and 60 when revs are on that seem right?

Sounds ok

Testing the oil pressure won't tell whether it has a cracked head or blown head gasket it will only show how the oil pumps getting on.

Borrow a compression tester and give it a test, it'll also tell ya which cylinders leaking

have a gander at this: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_can_you_tell_if_you_have_a_blown_head_or_a_blown_head_gasket_on_a_ford_3.8
