Need tire advice for V6 245/75r16 & Diff ratio's

Post by Chairmen »

Hi Guys, I would appreciate any and all advice on this matter of tires as its doing my head in  ..
I'v been researching tire make and size's foe the last 2 weeks, I have the coin ta buy how ever i want ta make sure i make the right choice...
Ok so i have a 2inch sus lift spring and shock (FTS) and in want to run biggest as possible tires but as iv been reading a crap load about the zokz is thay dont like going any bigger than a 31" before you want to do some serious mods to get 4x4 running decent and thats cool i guess later on down the track. But for now i'v found some 245/75r16 MT (second hand) at a decent price but i got ta choose asap as they will go soon, im not worried about clearance or rubbing as i got a few tweaks for that, What worries the bowl stores out of me is the gearing issues with this szie tire as its only half inch off 31" i really want to keep the low down grunt of gearin on standards tires.
I got a V6 auto with auto diff ratio's and would conisder putting diff nuggets from the manual V6 diff in to mi diff (if i can come across some) which should gear down a wee bit for the 30.5", Has anyone done this? I would like ta know how well it worked other wise ill have ta go with 245/70r16 29" at a brand new price
Ma bad for the long story but really need ta get it out there as im for ever obsessing to try to find a way around this :?:

Feed back would be greatly appreciated

Done it, change the diff ratios to 5.12 and it puts it within 4% of normal. Worth the change.

Taking out the pinion and ring gear means a bit of complex setup so I would leave them with the housing they came with. The 5.16 rear diff head should bolt straight in and you might have to swap the front centers over to make it 26 spline on the outputs. Do you have free wheeling hubs on the truck already? What part of the country are you from?

I live in Auckland out west, I would of put in the byo but cant seem to find in the settings where to do this haha

So fingers crossed i can find these diff soon cause im hanging out to go Woodhill 4x4 park as thrashing up and down Murawia each just ant doing it now...

Sweet, if you get the 1.6l 22 spline front diff you can swap the centers over to give you the 26 splines you need.

Woodhill is great, plenty of testing trails!

I live out east, let me know if there's anything else you need to know.

Have you done a suspension lift on your truck yet?

Ok thanks once again churchill.

No i haven"t put lift kit in yet. I'v got all my parts stock piled at home as i don't want to put them all in to i get the last peice of the puzzel the 5.12 diff 's...

I emailed Shane at Te Puke partsworld for v6 manual diff's thinking the ratio's in the MANUAL V6 are 5.12 and he emailed back stating this:

"Auto 2.0 V6’s have 4.875:1 diffs in them. Manuals usually have the Same diff ratio, but some do have 4.625:1 in them which is the opposite way from what you want to go. 1.6 escudos use 5.125:1 can do a pair of those diffs"

So with this in mind im gessing i use the 1.6 diff's and change a few parts over, have you done this? and are the 1.6 diff's as strong as the v6 diff's?

Both my diff's were from 1.6's. There's basically no difference in the front
diff except for the spline count, the rear diff housing might be little different as the suspension geometry changed a little with the 1.6 diff in but still went well.

As far as I can tell the V6's used 1.6l running gear and they were too weak for the smaller engine so be careful with how you drive as you can easily break stuff with the heavier V6's.

2.0 V6/J20a vehicles use longer front axles, longer rear axles, different front inner axle splines, different driveshafts etc etc etc from the early 1.6's

Yeah but it's all the same size as the avarage 1.6l and breaks in all the same places. The diffs heads are interchangeable, just watch the front spline count.
