Good 4wd out of the box. Nothing really comes close off the showroom floor. Coils and discs alround. Do have the odd "english issue" but probably not many more than other brands. Expect the usual "you bought what!!, should of bought a landcruiser/patrol/anything else but british...."
Thats a fairly high price though. Should be able to get a slightly earlier year jap import for a lot less, especially as you are saying it isnt your daily driver. That sort of price I would expect for a diesel. Parts are cheap too

Its NOT British..... i thought they were made in the uk but it has the japanese plant tag on it so i guess i could call it a Japanese Land Rover.
To be honest i drove our friends vx ltd landcruiser and shit that could outrun the surf any day but NO OFFENCE to any owners of landcruiser/patrol safari, they are( and i iknow this is going to get me into trouble) they are like a big Hippo in Mud and a bitch to get out, also they are out of my price range.

could you enlighten us why?? I assume this is from first hand knowledge?? Be interesting know how many you own/have owned?? How many have you off roaded, both easy and hard??
If you are going to say something like that atleast back it up with hard facts. Too many people are so pro what they drive that nothing else could possibly compare.... By all means prove me wrong but this sort of comment is so often seen on here.

Hey,
I can probably believe what he says because everything pretty much in the later discos are all electronic, and i hear storys all the time of them breaking diffs or axles

Really? I know that earlier ones, 2a an series 3 wear bad for that, once you took the original engine out, but I thought the Discos were a much better bet?
Wopass's Dad had a 3500 landrover, (pre disco?) and it never did anything naughty and he flogged the arse off it!

my uncle has had a '98 disco for 3 or 4 years now. Goes very well offroad. He gets his serviced by stag4x4 which I hear is a very good LR centre. It broke down (had no spark) while he was down here (the bay before cave bay at red rocks in welly) and we had to tow it all the way back home in the patrol (was very soft sand at the time too). Took it to williams and adams in wellington and the first thing they said it would be was the non genuine oil filter   . They ended up costing him alot of money and he just got it towed back to auckland. Took it to stag4x4 and they diagnosed the coil straight away. Its been reliable ever since.

ask around . why are they so cheap to buy? because they have a bad reputation, i wouldnt have one or a surf for that matter. the electrics are not the best, head gaskets are a problem as well. im saying for that money i would buy some thing else, and there is a lot to choose from in that price range.

They're not bad trucks, the 98s have a lot of electronics ABS, airbags, immobilisers etc which can play up -normally just the sensors but the earlier ones have no electronics to play up at all which makes life easier.
Having said that I got a 97 as a family wagon and it has been fine ( a few safaris etc) but for playing around in the mud I take the 90.

4x4boy has a 91 Disco and it goes great doesnt give any more problems than any other vehicle, they have a lot of articulation for little work.

SurfLover (ps you'll have to change you name)

I'm out Rangiora way, there is a V8 disco, looks fairly tidy but haven't been close for sale out this way, in a paddock on the side of the road with a tag in the window was under 10k - Am thinking more like 7-8. If interested I can shoot down the road and get some details if interested.

Also I know of another one in a sales yard out here for $10999 and diesel one for about 12-13k.

Or if you have 12 odd k to spend, another option - My brother has a narrow body lancruiser (Prado) with difflock etc that he's selling for about that money. He sold his sports car and bought it now wants to go back to a car. Nice truck, very capable, good condition, good resale. (See hanmer river thread for photos). He was able to get places the hilux had to have three goes at, or gave up on, simply because of the lockers.

Come out this way on Sunday for a look round! If interested pm me or email.

if thats the 97-8ish prado (if not then hes dreaming for that price) and you werent doing huge mods to it it (with some work the disco will get way better articulation cos its not ifs) get the prado. they are great trucks, my oldman had one, man it went some places for what it was. and with a diflock it would be even better.

The 97+ shape don't have the factory diff lock option, infact are a bit skimp on off road features from the factory although, as you say, are surprisingly capable despite that (my father has a 98 ).

The one for sale is the 3L turbo diesel in manual. If you are wanting something cheaper and are happy with higher running costs or lower power, go for the petrol prado or the 2.4 diesel.

Hi People

This Disco is a 98 with triple difflocks with 59000kms on the clock but unfortunatly its auto, but its a beauty for only 12k, although the colour is crap (Aqua Green) i still thik it is a good buy, i WONT be doing hard stuff like rock crawling but more mud and light river work (shiney stuff)
the surf is great but i want a new truck.

Cheers

I know of a couple that had temp issues, and one with an imobiliser that required the LR man to bring his laptop to Hanmer.

Thank god we were not still in the clarence river is all i can say, he had the LR chiped to remove this "Feature" just in case.

There is nothing wrong with the LR (or the surf) but you could try on the price, whats the worst that can happen he says no and you buy it anyway.

Oh one thing I am not sure how water tight the Landrovers are there was a lot of water in all of them (some in my hilux too).

Good luck

I'd be suprised to see triple difflocks in a Discovery. They only ever came out with a centre diff lock, so if this one has two cross-axle difflocks, they are aftermarket.

Most people are pretty suprised where a Discovery will get to with just a centre difflock. The axle articulation really is good.

The Discovery is a great truck, but you do have to "want" one, as opposed to settling for one just because its a bargain. Make sure you do your research before you buy. There is a huge amount of info (including buyers guides) on the net of what to look out for & avoid.

Ideally take someone along that knows what they're looking at with LRs.

There are lots of people out there that delight in repeating horror stories they have heard 2nd or 3rd hand about LRs! Be prepared for that!!

It's actually got $6000 on it. Looks ok (for a LR) :D :D :D

Hi, I sorry but i dont believe that LR's only come out with centre diff locks,
This one is standard, and our friend had one they are permanant 4wd untill you put into difflock, btw you might have a diesel wich may not come out standard in lockers. ive driven the diesel and they are gutless as shit no OFFENCE

No Disco or Rangie have ever come out with cross axle diff locks. They are all full time 4WD & either have a centre diff lock or viscous coupling to make it more than one wheel drive off road.

No locks in the front or rear axles. They will be aftermarket.

Hope this helps.

Nope all Discoverys left the factory with centre diff lock only. The front and rear diffs were standard open units like most other brands. Briefly land rover removed the centre diff lock in the series 2 discovery, but reintroduced it when the traction control wasnt quite up to it..
