Mazda Proceed

Hey guys/gals, just flicked through some of the pages, and its an awesome site!

Just wondering though, I went 4wdriving with my friend in his new (well, 1990) Mazda Proceed. We got it pretty stuck, only to find in 4WD low, only the rear wheels were spinning, and the front wheels were not (but it looked like they were trying...).
Is this because it doesnt have a centre diff lock? Is this quite a common thing with 4wd's?
Would the application of a hand-brake be enough to get the front wheels moving again?
