TD27 OVERHEATING?? 92 terrano auto

Hi guys i have another problem, im trying to sort out my 1992 terrano auto its the first time ive had it 80kms away from town runs fine around town etc

coming up the bombay hill the temp started to rise quickly i had over drive off sitting at 3000rpm most of the way up nearly at the top my temp needle was 3/4 nearly on the hot mark?

got to the top and hit overdrive and coasted down the other side it came down pretty quick

i have put in a new water pump and thermostat
doesnt use any water have a 50% mix antifreeze/water

any ideas ....buggered radiator? the pressue in the two main pipes off the radiator when i got home was not that hard started to build up a little while sitting at idle

wanting to take it away at xmas up the coromandel with a trailer at this stage i think it will cook its self

Get radiator flushed and cleaned professionally.

Mine used to raise temp a lot ( as you describe). A new thermostat helped mine a lot. Also free flowing exhaust helped mine.
I'm thinking radiator is a bit blocked and not working as good as it should at dissipating the heat.
You don't have anything (eg spotlights) blocking airflow to radiator?

The problem is that the trans will start to boil your radiator because the factory trans cooler is part of the radiator, and it is insufficient.

The current trans cooler is just a single short pipe that runs through the bottom of the radiator.

Get an after market trans cooler. Real easy to install and your problems will be gone.

A good Davies Craig trans cooler is about $135 from Supercheap Auto. All other places wanted to charge me just over $200 for the same thing???

cheers for the help guys have flushed radiator seems all good ,anyway gona put a trans cooler in over the weekend i see the pipes going into bottom of radiator if i put these through my cooler how do i block up the ones on the radiator that its using now?

You don't really need to block the old ones up, as they will be doing nothing. If you really want to, just cut the existing rubber hose enough so you can fold and clamp it.

the trans coolers come with rubber hose to connect to the steel line.

Ok had a look 4 a cooler are the repco ones any better same price fins look stronger its a driveline in black doesnt have the fine metals fins though would the repco 1 dissapate the heat as well?

They should have a rating on them. get the biggest one you can afford. i found supercheap cheaper for a davies craig cooler.

Before mucking around and spending money with external oil coolers I would be getting the radiator out and checked at specialists for pressure and flow (as already suggested).

A trip up the Bombays shouldn't cause it to get that hot unless there is a flow problem within the radiator, especially as water pump and thermostat already replaced.

Have you had radiator out and checked for flow with specialist? Just flushing in place with hose in place does not check flow or clear any blockages. Get it checked by a radiator specialist.

A couple of points to note here.

In standard trim the transmission transfers heat to the radiator via the trans cooler in the bottom tank of the radiator. Hauling up hill without overdrive on heats the auto trans heaps - this will in turn heat the radiator and engine.
I have an oil temp guage on my trans, it really does need OD or a down hill to cool the trans.
I run a big a@#$ trans cooler and avoid the factory trans cooler in the radiator to stop the trans overheating the engine.

The more antifreeze you run the less the efficient the cooling system. You need antifreeze as a corrosion inhibitor and in cold climes to well stop freezing of course, but in cast iron engine with a cast iron head I doubt you need 50/50 - I run 30/70 and it seems just fine so far.
You could always try some water wetter in there too.

That said and as others have said, a radiator flush is probably your best bet.

interesting reading this post, i had always had similar problems with my old td27, run like a champ but hills it always crept up, i ended up buying new water pump / new viscous fan / new radiator/ new rad. cap / new thermostat and i have stand alone trans cooler...Problem was still there not as bad but big hills especially with trailer the temp came up..If i still had the diesel i was going to mount a 12" fan on manual switch in cab to help the problem (recommend this). My viscous even when replaced only came on around 3/4 temp.

Edit: something else i always noticed was the radiator overflow never worked as intended.. either empty or rusty discoloured fluid which had been sitting
