Landy S1 and S2 steering...

Well a couple of months ago a mate and I picked up this wee gem. 54 S1 landy with a 186 and from what the cert plate says S2 diffs.







Truck goes great has been driven regularly and we are trying to keep that up driving it a couple of times a week.

On the weekend we went for a spin up to macetown. Just as we were pulling into home the wheel started shaking. Closer inspection showed the left front steering arm was missing a bolt where it goes onto the swivel hub with another about to fall out.

The side that went loose had four bolts holding it on. On the drivers side there are two bolts and two studs.

My questions are... how can I tell if it does in fact ahve s2 diffs? and are these bolts normally all studs as on my hilux? If so where can I get some replacements? Also replacements for the wee steel shim/locking tab that is on the drivers side. looks like it mights be a good idea to help stop it coming loose!

probably not much help to you but I dunno if theres any difference between SI and S2 front diffs, the SI rear diffs were semi floaters and S2 onwards were full floating

i dont know about s1-s2 but iv used s2/a and s3 diff and axel bits interchangeably in mine. nice looking s1.

Yea they are a bit buggered. Picked up some new ones from the dump on the weekend $50 for SATs with tread rims and less cracking haha.

So anybody know if they should be bolts or studs?

It's probably not going to matter too much, Suzuki's use bolts, I've noticed Toyota's use studs, maybe loctite some studs in might stop them from coming loose.

S1 and S2 axles are essentially the same apart from the S2 rear being trussed and full floating.


Our S1 which I'm workin on has the same issue, a snapped stud, and the other three loose.

Try http://www.seriesoneshop.com, or take a stud to MSL or EDL and they might be able to match it.

Or just drill the Whitworth threads out of the swivel hub and tap your own metric threads in for the win

By any chance, do you know if the brakes are different between s1 and s2?

New shoes are next on the list. If they are all the same I'll just order some. If not will whip them off first.

I think you will find the thread on the steering is bsf and the bolts are very hard to find I think I still have the taps somewhere ,you a welcome to them as long as you promise to pass them round to those in need just pm me ,but may be best to retap metric as its not really original is it now cheers .

The 54 series one had the same studs as the early series 2 in 1958 and 59. The 2a has the steering arm at the bottom.

The axles all have serial numbers in front of the breather to identify them. Series 2 will have a prefix 1428..... or 1429..... and the 54 series one will start with a prefix 4..... for the 54 year

Both the series 1 and 2 have 3 studs the same and one special one which is a bit longer but I don't know why.
