Re: the champs we are stuck with in nelson
I don't know why they just don't throw them a rope, tell them to tie it round them, then swim, and rope stops them going downstream (reel it in as they get closer).
What would happen if they'd tried it in a river somewhere that no-one would have found them for hours/days?
Sure, if river was in flood, and lives could be lost....
(but in that event a neighbour got in a kayak and rescued the 'victims')
But look at the picture, other people waded out to connect a rope to tow out...
Surely this would be at least twice as dangerous (get pinned against truck by current) than swimming away from truck?

Completely agree. I guess if something DID go wrong during the rescue, you wouldn't want to have been the one to make that call. Have to play it safe these days and go above and beyond what might be required, just to cover your own arse I guess.

Must of been a very slow day and no real news to put in paper.. Hardly news worthy at all .
Perhaps the writer has a hidden agenda.

It happened very close to a major hiway bridge, chopper flying overhead, 4x4 stuck in river.

"An 11-year-old passenger was swept 130 metres down the river after falling off the vehicle."
they left that out of the paper.
