i have 12mm plasma seems a bastard to splice so went to bridon/cookes and got a needle kit works great on 10mm as needle is 10mm o/d but with 12mm the needle is 13mm o/d and wont thread up the middle

I've got instructions on a pdf, but it would take a cleverer bloke than me to upload it on here. If you want to pm me an email, I can send it to you that way.
I've just spliced some 1/2" rope and didn't need to use a fid, the rope opened up enough to feed it through without it.

Use the bottom end of a bic ballpoint pen and thin the end of the rope. Over about 150mm taper the rope to about 1/2 the thickness or thinner buy cutting out the strands. Then butt the thin end up to the pen end and tape it up with electrical tape. Good to go. When it is far enough down the middle of the main rope poke the pen out and remove it. Tappering the rope also removes the point load caused by the sudden change in size where it ends inside the main rope.

Yeah you can taper the rope down then just use electrical tape to bind it semi rigid. Are you splicing in a thimble or looking to join rope to rope?

Links to 'loop splice' and 'end splice' instructions with pictures are here http://www.4wdbits.co.nz/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=958

Use the 10mm fid on the 13mm rope, or use meatc's pen or a peice of wire bent at 180 degrees to give a smooth round end which is easy to puch up the centre.
