Power Steering Prob, on a Surf

Post by dazza85 »

I have a '91 Surf with a power steering problem,
When I first start in the morning there is vibration in the steering wheel when turning. :? :?
This stops after a couple of corners.
Also when getting close to full lock it screeches loudly.
I have checked the fluid level, Its OK

What next :?: :?:

I would look at your power steer belt, it may be loose

Hey smurf
You were spot on
Why did I not think of that
I had that problem a few years ago on my old Vaxuhall and the Generator belt used to do that in the cold weather.

  Thanks so much ...That man deserves a "Tui"

Aha - so that'll be the horrible screeching on my Rugger too ? So next question is - anyone know where the power steering belt is on a Rugger ? Probably a dumb question, but I haven't had the luxury of power steering before
Also, does the screeching mean it's doing damage (apart from to my ears) ?

Very likley the same thing,
The only dammage is to the belt and even that is minimal because the noise is caused by the belt sliping - though it sounds a lot worse

Sorry I do not know where the pump is on your truck though the easy way is to follow the hose from the Power steering fluid reservoir to the pump and you will have the pully that you want

Well I've fixed the screeching to everybodys relief but I noticed this morning that the vibration and a humming noise in the steering is still there for the first few corners ...

Any Ideas ?

I also noticed yesterday when I was looking under the truck that there is fluid in the outside of the steering box ... :? :?

Could this be related ?

sounds like you are getting air in your system , which is being bled out as you turn the steering box.

Sounds like a blown seal somewhere, I am using 5speed oil in my power steering and I find it way better than ATF
