Selecting a Winch
Selecting a Winch
Hi all, need help choosing a winch (money not an issue).
Basically I had a Warn 8274-50 about 4 years old until cable come off the spool and wrapped round the casting mount and tore it off. I now have the option of choosing to run a different winch.
Insurance have priced my winch at $4200 NZD. So i thought i'd ask here if anyone knows of some good winches like the 8274, competition winches etc.. Just trying to keep my options open.
Cheers,
James.

More details required, What vehicle are you fitting the winch to and what will you be using it for, ie winch challenges, club runs or farm work.

Re: Selecting a Winch
if you want to stay electric you wont be getting any better than an 8274 mate..... shit if the insurance company is offering to replace it jump on it

Re: Selecting a Winch
Fitted to a 1990 nissan safari SWB - club runs. I still want speed something if not same or better than 8274 (if thats even possible), and has to be ofcourse 24v which I've noticed limits the selection.
I do love the Warn 8274, but i wouldn't mind shopping round to see what else is out there.
Would love to have the Warn 8274-60 out of all winches but yeah not going to happen.

Re: Selecting a Winch
could do a 2 12v motor winch if ya cant find a good 24v one.
Re: Selecting a Winch
There is only one winch better than the Warn 8274-50 and that's a Gigglepin top hat twin motor winch from UK (or Aussie) and even then its seriously a modified Warn 8274-50.
Insurance replacing you winch so stick with it. If not there will be a long queue wanting that insurance replaced brand new 8274-50 off you.

Re: Selecting a Winch
8274-60 was the 60th anniversary version produced in very limited numbers, i think only 250 or something like that. They can still be found in for around USD 4,500. 8274-50 with newer motor is pretty much exactly the same without the branding and colour I believe. Go for that.

Yeah hence my comment.
I'm pretty sure the new 8274-50's don't come out with the same rated motor as the 8274-60.

8274-50 has 4.6 motor while the special limited edition 8274-60 has 6.0hp motor.
I would be happy enough with the standard 4.6 for most uses apart from serious competition.
Re: Selecting a Winch
That 6hp Warn motor is from 9.5xp low mount winch. Under load, both are extremely close in speed. I will have to dig up the specs when I get home (replying from my phone).

Re: Selecting a Winch
Just had a quick look, 6hp was for 12v application not for 24v. Even 8274 - 50 for 24v is 2.5hp motor. That would be right given law of physics and electrical currents.

In Aussie they put 24v through the 12v motors with no problems. So a 12v 6.0hp motor in a 24v vehicle will work very well.
Re: Selecting a Winch
Yeap 24v through 12v is great for speed, not so much for longetivity. If you aren't racing then a standard 8274 os pretty good.
Toy - Zuk chassis tub, hilux 4.88 axles and transfer, Nissan CA18DE motor and auto trans, sc12 supercharger, 32 10'5 simex, twin motor 8274 custom freespool. Well the parts are all there in various corners of the shed
Re: Selecting a Winch
looks like ill stick with a brand new 8274. that 2.5hp is wrong i think because when you calculate the hp under full load it works out to over 8 hp with the 24v motor, and if you read the kw output next to the 2.5hp on the specs its higher than the hp. doesnt make sense

Re: Selecting a Winch
you can also buy other hp rated motors that i belive will bolt straight on.
FYI my 24v runva motor bolts straight onto dads warn 12v xd9000

Thats handy to know, do you have the ewx-9500? the speed of that thing is crazy
Re: Selecting a Winch
I think you will find that a large number of winch motors are actually interchangeable as they often have same mounting holes. This is for similar pulling power winches.

nah its the ewx 12000. Would have liked the 9500 but its a bit lite for pulling me lwb safari through door deep swamp

It would pull fine mate, if you've got a problem with the motor rating and got money burning a hole in your pocket you can throw the 2.5hp motor away and shove a 9.5hp motor on it but dont go expecting it to have line speed like some of the winch trucks you see on youtube without throwing some serious money and bling at your setup

and that is proberly the best point. Fast isn't always best

Yeah I know, there's some seriously awesome mods for these winches. Found a top casting mount to support twin motors, but it's pushing a $1000 just for the mount no extra motor included.
As far as speed goes the one I had on it was great anyway, and i still don't agree with these facts on the specs: Motor: Series Wound, 12V 4.6 hp/3.43kw, 24V 2.5 hp/3.43kw - the kw of the 24v is the same as the 12v, so I assume it's putting out identical hp 4.6hp not 2.5hp.
Max load pull speed 12v:
8000(3630) line pull lbs(kg)
6.10(1.86) ft/min (m/min)
450 amps
5/6290(2853) pull by layer by layer / lbs(kg)
Max load pull speed 24v:
8000(3630) line pull lbs(kg)
7.9(2.41) ft/min (m/min)
273 amps
5/6290(2855) pull by layer by layer / lbs(kg)
The specs show that the 24v will outporm the 12v, but thats a given really.

The winch isn't lifting the truck though. You would've got a way with the competition version on it imo. You'll only have the sunction of the swamp working against it.

And there in lies the weight. My W/C zuk is around 1000kgs, but I have stalled a 6hp 8274 and gone close to stalling the modded one I have now with 18hp, I have no idea what the actual pulling power is on that, but its lots. The weight of mud you can push and what you can get hooked on under the mud can add a heap of weight.

not suction.we do runs on swamp that is nothing but a weed mat and knee deep water. and after 3 full length pulls in a row.the weed mat build up is massive. Don't know how many fast winches i've seen crap out down here in swamps.
At the end of the day if you want a Fast winch then get one. The high mount is a tried and tested winch with heaps of proven mods available to make it even better. Thats what i'd be doing anyhow

There is almost certainly something wrong with the power figures for the 24v motor there ^^.
Power (Watts or HP etc) = work done/time taken
The 24v motor pulls the same load in less time so logic says it must be more powerfull.
Watts (input) also = volts x amps so if we double the voltage (12 to 24) we should see half the amps for the same power output. The 24v motor draws more than half the amps of the 12v one. This also indicates that the motor is more powerful (or possibly less efficient but thats another story...).
For the 12v version 12v x 450amps = 5400w or 5.4Kw (input power)
The output power is stated as 3.43Kw. This indicates about a 63% efficiency (which is believable) with most of the missing 1.97kw being blown off as heat.
The 12v figures look about right. 746watts = 1 horsepower so 4.6HP and 3.43Kw are the same...all good.
Assuming a similar efficiency and that the amps are correct for the 24v motor:
24v x 273amps = 6552watts or 6.55Kw (input power)
6552watts x 0.63 (eff%) = 4127watts or 4.1Kw which is approx 5.5Hp
Which is why the 24v motor does the same work in less time

Re: Selecting a Winch
Maybe keep an eye out for a second hand 8274 then spend your money on sticking a bigger motor, replacing solenoid putting drain plugs etc, would have money to possibly put a bearing and freespool on end support assembly. would be a wicked winch then.

Re: Selecting a Winch
New winch is on. Looks really good. Haven't noticed any changes except the hand remote control and an extra earth from control box to motor. Still got to take off the control box cover to see if the relays are the same.
Ordered a warn winch cover and warn hawse fairlead from the states, so can't wait for these to arrive. A plasma rope would go nicely on it.
Looks like I'm able to keep my old winch, but it will need some new castings mounts.

New Warn Hawse fairlead arrived today. it's purrrfffect, exceptional quality. Glad I got one of these rather than the crap sold in NZ for the same price.

Are you running wire or synthetic?
