Isuzu MU Airbag disable?

Post by SupraLux »

Does anyone know how to temporarily disable the airbags on a 4WD, speicifically a 96 MU?

Oh, and Tom - I don't want to hear how driving it fast into a pile of rocks will disable them, after a short explosion

I've just picked one up quite cheap, but the wife is worried about putting the 3yo in the passenger seat as there have been reports of small kids being hurt or killed by being hit with the bag as it fills when they go off. I read you can fit a disable switch to individual bags, but was hoping someone may have done this.

Or, alternatively I set them both off- remove them and fit a hilux front axle to it for some rock bashing :) Its got a shite-load of grunt... reckon it would make a very nice off-roader with the right hardware under it.

Airbag disable

Post by hinsonberger »

Hi Steve,

I definitely wouldn't put your 3 year old in a seat equiped with an airbag. Like you say, the forces involved in an airbag deploying are sure to seriously harm (even to a fatal extent) small children.

I think for safety & compliance you would be best to take the vehicle to a GM dealer & see if they could fit a disable switch & certify everything for you.

Could be costly, but not as costly as the alternative in an accident. Incidently, no chance of obtaining/using the back seat?

Yeah, we can use the back seat, but being a three-door its awkward - so just looking at alternatives...

Like I said, it very well could become an offroad beast yet... although I don't like the idea of changing my name to SupraMu or MuLux! :P

I'll check with GM... Thanks for the idea.
