well guys im getting prepped for my first rally, gunna take the terrano with some maxis mudders, 245 75 16's i think,
ive got the front tow hook sorted, gunna take off my towball and replace with a Bow shackle (rated of corse) and borrowing a fire extinguisher.
im going to get intercooler sorted beforehand, not going to turn fuel up or anything like that just yet. gunna wait till i have the funds for an egt guage.
ive been told i will most likely be in the greater modified class, as i have 1 traction aid (rear Lsd) and a SAS in the front.
Im not looking to win just yet, but just get into it and see what its like, and see how it goes.
What sort of things would be handy to know before hand? i know the basics like turning wheels to get some traction, lowering tyre pressure etc. but is there any other tips?
also i dont know at what point i give up if im stuck? as soon as i have lost foward momentum do i just give up and hook the strop up?
cheers for any info guys, much appreciated.

dunno what sort of rally it is but just go and have fun mate and you'll pick it all up as you go, if its hard technical shit just go to your ability rather than smash your truck up coz you didnt know what you were doing (ie the truck down the bottom of the hill on its roof)

Re: Prepping for first rally (8th of Dec)
thats the glory of having a safari front axle lol, at least i dont have to worry about bending tie rods or idler arms lol.
What sort of stuff would you suggest as spares?
i will be taking a couple of extra tyres, but i cant think of much else that could brake apart from something major like c.v's or hubs, which i cant afford at the moment any way
only real spare parts i have is a spare diff head, but if that shits itself i dont think i wanna do a change while im there, id save that for concrete floors lol.
i will be taking extra diesel too, just in case...

if you cant afford spares and are on a budget, watch how much you turn your wheels when youd giving it lots of gas. if it finds traction you can break cvs easier then if the wheels are strait

Re: Prepping for first rally (8th of Dec)
a bit of basic shit never goes amiss for a start mate, fluids, hoses/belts, nuts and bolts, bit of electrical wire and shit, number 8 wire, cable ties, hacksaw, the big sledge hammer out of the shed
plenty of water (the goodmans always tow a 1000l water tanker trailer with a petrol pump with their pit crew) all that shit usually keeps your truck running
any other mechanical bits you have to weigh up what sort of event it is, what parts you've got sitting in the shed and whether there worth taking, other than a broken diff, a broken winch (I took the spare
) and a few minor things my failure points are always cooked alternators and overheating with a radiator full of mud

Re: Prepping for first rally (8th of Dec)
If you are going anywhere near rocks, might be worth thinking about a rear driveshaft. You don't want this happening

My 2c
Good luck. Cheers,

I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!
Re: Prepping for first rally (8th of Dec)
I'd expect they'll put you in modified. Factory traction aids, LSD or lockers dont put you up a class, well they didnt use to. if aftermarket mods. 245/75's only stand aout 31" from memory, personally I'd have you in standard class. if they know its your first event...
Take a helmet. make sure your seat belts work. your tow hooks are well fixed on. fire extinguisher.
And take it easy if your planning on driving it home. Just get a feel for things, walk every hazard and work out where hard ground is.
Come and say hi.. I should be there. Blue "Vee Bug" behind red Mitsi Triton.

Dont follow me. i'll get stuck and need a tow..

Yea what he ^ said.
Factory LSD doesn't put you up a class. Tecnically since the front suspension is all changed then yes you should be in greater modified, however with such small tyres you'd be a fish out of water, can you not get some 33's or greater?
I'd try and get a tow hook for the back rather than a D shackel - you'll know why after the event if using tractors as recoveries, no snatch straps to be used with tractors.
Don't bother with spare parts
, just take a little water, a little oil and a tool kit.
As for the course, as soon as your no longer moving you stop, otherwise you wreck the course, don't try back up, lower your tyre pressures, use a bit of thought and you will be fine.
Wouldn't worry about extra diesel, you'll use 10 litres max.

I take it this is the matura rally, where abouts is it again?
Addicted to suzukis....
Re: Prepping for first rally (8th of Dec)
cheers for the info guys,
I will be towing it behind our bighorn, the ranno isnt road legal just yet lol.
Its not a factory lsd but i suppose they do come factory.....
Im thinking about taking the tow bar off and replacing it with hooks, its allways the reason why i get stuck so dam often.
I allways carry around a container or two of water, and oil, forgot about them
And it is the mataura rally,
12 ks up old coach road it will be sign posted from there.
And un fortunatly i cant find any 33's in my budget (ive got maybe $100 in total to spend on it, minus two bow shackles lol)
unless someone is willing to lend me some? i really would like to try it on some nicer tyres, but either way i wil learn. gota walk before you can crawl...
Ill look foward to seeing you there callum, and i hope youl be there too NJV6.
ill be there in a black nissan terrano, towed behind a green (do they come in other colours?) bighorn with a bull bar on the front.
