Turboing Safari

Post by u13turbo »

Got a mate wanting to turbo a safari, I have been searching through the forums and have seen TD05's seem to be a good choice to use? After a decent brand so it can actually run 15ish psi, not chinese shit like DSR or Scarles etc. Where is a good place to get a manifold? not to bothered about the quality of that. Also, for 15psi will it be necessary to intercool? Ideally getting a whole kit minus turbo would be good, is that an option from somewhere?
Also i seen a manifold somewhere with a T3 flange, what are the Rb turbo's like for a diesel?
Cheers

go with a j pipe. cheap simple and work. Tdo5s will run 15psi easy but for the sake of longlivity put a rebuild kit in. you should be able to get a second hand turbo and rebuild kit for same price as one of those crappy ones new. If he gunna run that kinda boost level the intercooling is a good idea if not a must.
Don't go any bigger tha a 16g small wheel(wrx size) or he'll have massive lag.

What exactly do you mean by j pipe? and sweet so just a Wrx turbo? is there any other cars the 16g's come off?

At a guess front mount intercooler would cause to much lag?

Thanks for the info mate.

its a pipe that comes off the manifold and upto were you'd mount the turbo.like this

I used a wrx turbo on this setup. if you get one with the elbow on the inlet of the compressor,it needs to be cut off and a straight piece of pipe welded on.

Ahh yeah i see what you mean. Hes pretty keen to get a new manifold and all the bits, just not really happy with the crap turbo's, so yeah the TD05's seem like a better idea

Not much choice for manifolds over here, either have to make one or buy one, a good Aussie one is $700-$800 can still get the DSR type off ebay they aren't to bad for the price, a new TD05 with a t3 flange is around $1450+gst. The evo and wrx turbos have different flanges to most of the manifolds that you can buy off the shelf.

most of those aftermarket manifolds are cast so welding on is not really a good idea.
