Is my alternator on the way out??

Post by LJ70kid »

Hey All,

The truck is coming along well BUT...recently, when I turn the ignition on, the battery, t-belt and filter light stays on...Prior to yesterday, after the engine turned on, the lights would turn off.

According to the vault meter the battery is still charging but from what I have seen in the past, it is not charging as high as before.

Any advise? Is my alternator on the way out?

Cheers
Dan

My hilux did the same thing when I first bought it. It is a sign that the alternator is not working as it should, in my case it was a worn alternator belt. Unless you have already done so you may want to check your belts.

If the voltmeter in the dash isnt reading as high as it used to then the battery isnt charging, coz of all the other shit going on with other warning lights coming on you may have a wiring issue not a faulty alternator :?: , have you taken the truck for a swim or something lately?

Nope? Haven't even been swimming... haven't even taken it out in heavy rain lately...

That does make sense though because for about 3o min (while driving) prior to this all happening it was jumping between "normal" and where it is now...

Sound like an alternator to me. Before you start messing with it. I would suggest removing it and taking it to an auto sparky to put on a test bench.
Latest mod, pin stripes, hit the same branch I did on the way in on the way out.

ford ranger wildtract and sj.
