kzj78 wont go into low range

Post by ezzymac »

Brought a Prado recently and among the many faults (was cheap) the low range selector isnt working. was very stiff shifting it from high to neutral to low. when I got it into low range it stayed in at the same speed as high range. Any Ideas?

manual? auto? autos need to be in N before you shift the t case lever?
is the linkage connected underneath? will it shift into N on the t case?
maybe its bent or needs some lubrication on the mechinisms

Make sure the lever is fully home when going into low...
If its not the teeth will bounce over each other and sound terrible...

This won't help you.
But my LJ78 was very hard to move the selector into low box when I got it. two oil changes later and a few 4wd trips and now it won't stay in low box under load.
I'm looking to find another box and pull my old one apart and see what went wrong.

with your, the first thing I would do would be looking underneath and checking that the linkage is connected and straight.

It goes into low range mechanically but the ratio is no different to high range when driving it. ?????

Hmmm sounds like the selector shaft is not moving the gear over.
Could have sheared a pin...
Or the rod is slipping where it is clamped on... Need to get under the truck and have someone move the lever and see whats happening.
Also down load a manual... The is one kicking around for the LJ series which is basically the same except for the engine...

its all mechanical so if its not going into low its doing just that ie: its not shifting onto the low range gear so its got to be linkage or selector
