Lifting sling in place of tree trunk protector

Post by nismo404 »

Hi guys, was looking at using lifting slings instead of tree trunk protectors as I can get them cheap through work.

Has anyone used them before?

A 3 tonne yellow sling when used around a tree has a swl of just over 4 tonnes, even up to 5 depending on the angle. Including the safety factor of 7 that's a breaking strain of 28 tonnes, about the same as a 4.75 tonne bow shackle with a safety factor of 6.

Does anyone have any reasons why they shouldn't be used?

Thanks

Cheers guys, also just wondering if anyone knows why tree protectors don't have ratings and instead just breaking strains? With a breaking strain of 8000kg, what most of them appear to be, I can't imagine the swl would be that high.

I use a Cookes lifting sling as a tree trunk protector. The tag shows 3t for straight lift and 6t when doubled (like when used around a tree). Also lists safety factor as 8:1, like most gear designed for lifting. Breaking strain when doubled would therefore be 48t! Don't think there is much danger of my 12000lb winch breaking it :0)

The tree truck wont have SWL as its not designed for anything other than Protecting a tree trunk, hense the lack of swl.

Doesnt mean that it cant be rated for anything else. a competant rigger would be able to look up acopll manual for rating
Dont follow me. i'll get stuck and need a tow..
