good but affordable gps?

hi guys i'm looking at getting a gps to take with me when i go for a shoot, but i havn't had much to do with them. also i'm not rich. anyone had any experence with the cheaper ones and mind giving me a bit of a review?

garmin etrax is cheap can, plot points, record tracks, give you directions to a point like were you started from, all the things you need, then you just plug into the computer and can take the files off and open them in google earth to see your tracks and ploted points

new garmin etrex is about 150$
new garmin gps62 bout 500$
rhino around 700$

current model is the gps62 has better antena for when in tree cover, 3axis compass i think the 60 model has these features as well, so would be a good option to get a secound hand 60 model rather than a new etrex


just make sure if ya get one it has full nz map loaded onto it

garmin rhino is like a gps62 combined with a radio bt there quite expenive another option tho

youtube them will give you a better idea oh what ya want

You got a smart phone? Get a copy of ViewRanger with the NZ topos, only about 50 bucks. I use one they're fine, reception not as good as the Garmin dedicated GPS in dense bush but then I only ever use it alongside a map and compass (if necessary) anyway

Are you running dogs. If so a GPS dog tracker is the way.

nah no dogs but have been offered a dog tracking one that could be a go just waiting to hear more info.

I have one of the dog tracking ones, worked great (don't have any dogs at the mo). But for just marking spots, tracks, game trails etc it works fine. My only comment would be that labelling your marks, way point etc is slow as you don't have a key board. Smart phone could be worth looking into, but I don't have any experience there. You may even be able to insert photos which would be cool.
