Re: 3.8 commy to toyota auto
if i remember correctly it is now just as easy to buy the transfer case adaptor kit to fit to the holden trans.
Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.
Re: 3.8 commy to toyota auto
i dont want to use the commy auto i know it can be done and probly alot cheaper than having to buy the kit.
Re: 3.8 commy to toyota auto
why dont you want the commy trans?one of the best readily available autos out there

yes it can. but not cheap, go cheap you'll spending more time in a workshop then in the mud...or in the mud and in need of a work shop.

Re: 3.8 commy to toyota auto
from what i gather the easiest way would be the commy auto and a transfer out of a 3.1 auto bighorn
Re: 3.8 commy to toyota auto
i have 3 toyota autos around home also have a good source that i can get bighorn parts. this is a how to thread not a why not to thread.
Re: 3.8 commy to toyota auto
Yes can be done have done it with a pardo commy to a 343auto bit of work involved but can be done hardest bit was getting toyota talk converter to mate up to holden flexi plate as its bigger than flexi but its going now and goes well have had it on runs all over the north island

Re: 3.8 commy to toyota auto
how too thread huh... ok you take a GMH 3.8 and a GMH auto trans and a GMH transfercase and bolt them together.
GMH...see where this is going...every one here so far has said the best way to do it for a reason... it is the best and most bullet proof waythe other guy here who has done it the hard way found out the hard way how much of a bitch it is to mate yota boxes to GMH engines.
then you have to put the starter motor somewhere it's shouldn't be, remember you've got exhaust header either side now. then the electrical load required for the petrol V6 with its electronics needs a stable power feed and distribution system a diesel fuse box and wiring system doesn't cut it.
then you have to mate the Engines ecu to the toyota's auto ecu so they know what they are doing...go see the 17 page thread on mating a nissan engine to a nissan gearbox to figure out how much harder it is going to make a GMH engine talk to a toyota auto trans......and least we forget now the toyota box isn't going to do what you want now anyway because the power band of the V6 is going to send the trans gear changes up shit creek without a shifter.
when I put the RB30 nissan twin cam turbo in my hilux the wiring and engineering bill was twice that of the parts acquisition and installation. it was easier in hindsight (like a fellow board member going through this at the moment with his terrano) to use the powertrain all from one make and or model.
there is more hidden stuff you not take into consideration yet but its clear you want to do it the hard way.
thats my 10 cents keep the change.

Re: 3.8 commy to toyota auto
Prob the cheapest way to do this is to buy a VN-VP or what ever you can find as a doner. A couple of friends have got them for around $200. Then you need to make a coupling to go from Holden auto to Toyota transfer case. You can do this with not too much hassle if you take your time. Easy peasy

am watching this post with interest

looks as tho torque converter was changed to suit commy bolt patern on the flexi plate, also prados have a stand alone ect which may be able to work otherwise it will be a manual shift model.

cressida / crown have a stand alone computer for the auto
still going to be an issue that shift patterns are for a rev happy straight 6 (5m-ge motor) if you get the right one
Also from playing with 80-30's the electronic shift unit on the side of the trans will need to be swopped as different units run different wire patterns... how the older shift unit will work with the 4wd trans mechanical bits I'm uncertain... I know it can be done with the lexus version of the 80-30 the catch is the 4wd trans has an extra wire and I havn't pulled a unit apart to see what it does
I stopped working on the 80-30 as an option when I decided to go Nissan motor, most motor sales give you an auto free so all I need is the auto loom and comp and since they arn't something that normally sells they are cheap at the wreakers and I avoid all the bs of adapting the bellhousing and torque converter along with miss-matched shift ranges, got enough shit to worry about designing the rest of the truck
As for lowering shift range patterns, to suit the torque of the V6 there is a very smart guy in Hastings who does it with GM stuff he maybe able to do it with the yota comp.... he's not cheap tho
If you decide to keep going with this please post up as you go I'd be keen to help out where I can, what you do could be usefull to me as I haven't totally given up on the 80-30 as the surf version has a nice short trans, I still have to see if I can shorten the nissan auto
Cheers Reece
