Mazda Proceed???
Mazda Proceed???
Hey there - I'm looking for a 7 seater 4wd that is cheap..... I have come across these Mazda's - there are lots of other options around, Pajero, Patrol, Prado, Mitsubishi Delica Spacegear to name a few.... was mainly looking at price - They seem to look allright.... I don't want a big tough truck but I do some exploring etc.... they are a 2.6l petrol - economy won't be flash but it won't be a daily driver for a weekend explorer and fire wood gatherer! when needed - our people mover is not ideal for those forestry roads on 19" chrome alloys!
Has anybody owned or still has one and can tell me what they are like.... they are cheap! $2500 on trade me for a mid 90's one with under 200k on the clock seems all right! there can't be many about as there is not even a mazda topic on the forums!
Thanks!
Chris Watson

Re: Mazda Proceed???
yes my first 4x4 was a proceed ute cab and half, they are lightish, good wheel base, mine was manual 5 speed, engine braking was good, tended to run out of puff on steep hill climbs, most power feed to the rear wheels, needed to pull hand brake on to climb out of holes, sod all front axle flex, but a fun drive anyway

Re: Mazda Proceed???
i had a proceed hard body and have just picked up a proceed extra cab pick up for only $1700!!! deal, and with a new wof..mine even has a set of extractors on it
the worst thing with them is theyr known to crack heads, all though what 4x4 doesnt?? keep them serviced, keep the radiator core clear of debri and youll be sweet.
full economy isnt actually that rubbish tbh...
they tow ok,just lack the grunt.
if you need to get more room for bigger tyres you can wind it up a tad, and body lift kits are available out of the states....
i like them cos your not paying for a toyota badge...and are still capable of going places..
and they have a HUMONGOUS boot area!!

Re: Mazda Proceed???
1 1/2'' of front wheel travel as i was told by a mazda person from headoffice when i complained to them about it,
was fun for me
was fun for me

Re: Mazda Proceed???
id snap some pics of mine but i just got back from burnham and have ripped into sanding it for a respray so doesnt look too snazzy at the mo...
tyre-guard clearance seems good on this one...so maybe just a good set of muds for it will do.

Re: Mazda Proceed???
Hey there - I found a 1991 Proceed Marvie 7 seater.... Trade Me - Mint condition, 3 tiny rust spots on the body, not a dent to be found, brakes nice and true - motor purrs like a cat - 270,000km on the clock - 4wd system all seems to work ok - can't really fault it to be honest - rego is on hold and Warrant is bout 2 months out. Got it for $1200!! I think it will fly through a warrant (hopefully!) has just had the head done so thats good to know!
Very pleased..... Putting a set of SAT tyres on it - got them for nothing so not gonna complain too much....
Has anybody made their own snorkle? I've seen the odd one about in photos on here... any tips?
Gonna put some new longer travel shocks on it as when I twisted it on a bank the other night the shocks seem to be limiting the downward travel at the rear.... Front!? doesn't do a whole lot either way!
Any ideas to improve suspension / engine performance is most welcome....
Do these have an LSD in the back out the factory does anybody know?
On the economy comment I read here - it used 32l to drive from dunedin to Invercargill (bout 220km) which isn't too bad for an old donk!
Anyway - thanks and I look forward to heading out for a play!

Re: Mazda Proceed???
1200 is a good score with a new head...we also got our first proceed cos it had a new nz made head on it,went like a charm...
i need to do the valve lashes on mine at some stage...
ive also seen a couple with snorkels, but id say these are old school stock,
i havent found any stockists for them, so ill just get one made up.
put some extractors on it like mine, thatl let it breath i bit better...

Re: Mazda Proceed???
Yeah I was pretty stoked with $1200.... been looking for a long while - not the ideal off roading 4wd - will never compare to my lifted FJ40 or my SWB liffted Patrol I used to have.... BUT with 4 kids now neither of those two were ideal!
I do a fair bit of hunting now and don't currently have excessive dollars to buy a nice 7 seater prado or the likes. The proceed was the best option cost wise for a truck that would get me up and around a few of Southlands hills for hunting and photography expeditions.
How many dollars roughly for a set of extractors?
Thanks for your sugestions!
Cheers Chris!

mine came with lukey headers on it...
ring autobend, they may have something there...
also, if you need a tag along on a hunting/bush drive give us a yodel...it needs to get dirty

Re: Mazda Proceed???
Ive got a Ute version. Haven't had any power issues from the 2.6 petrol. one thing to look at from the petrols is the ECU's can go sometimes. other than that its a strong truck for what I paid. and try getting a hilux for 5k with 180000ks on it
Don't they just have a transfer case rather than a center diff or is that only the utes?

Re: Mazda Proceed???
yes transfer case, the ute has great engine braking 1st low, never got to see why power seemed to go to the rear not evenly but was a good thing offroad

Re: Mazda Proceed???
ive also noticed the engine braking...
when i get off the gas it actually slows itself down quite fast, is better than the new DT mitsy tritons for engine braking...
seriously lacks fuel capacity...i keep thinking the milage is crap,400kms before needing to fill up(1/4 tank a day)....but it only takes 39l or so...

Re: Mazda Proceed???

Re: Mazda Proceed???
this is my one...will be making a hefty front and rear bars, and a rollbar for the deck(that may turn to flat deck one day).
picked up some 31" MTs for it, will also make a snorkel, and do a body lift to increase guard-tyre clearances.

has anyone managed to get some flex out of the front of one of these?
swaybar disconnect?
will be fitting twin jerry can holders to overcome the minimal fuel capacity.
on the lookout for some factory flares for it, to keep it legal.

Re: Mazda Proceed???
radiator isnt too bad...
allthough i dod need to replace it with a new one asap, its looking rather perished, so best to replace that before replacing a motor..
im also looking at putting a turbo on it to see how that works out.
they run about 8.5:1 comp ratio as standard so no wonder they lack power..
mine has done over 350,000kms now and the lifters are starting to drive me nuts, so the turbo will either work or it wont, if it doesnt then ill just rebuilt the G6..
have thought about transplanting a WL-T into it aswell.
its a great truck and alot better value than a ifs hilux..

Re: Mazda Proceed???
was reasearching turbing myself and im pretty sure the turbo setup of a 2.2 mazda mx6 turbo (rare as hell but they exist) would be a easy fit to the g6 engine
Re: Mazda Proceed???
ive been trying to find stuff on it aswell, but havent had much luck, have only seen the earlier carbed mitsy verion with a turbo...
so i guess ill just guinea pig it.

Re: Mazda Proceed???
yup there will be something that fiths mazda seemed to make a rare turbo version of everything do you know how different the FE heads outa telstars are as they came out as s turbo also
Re: Mazda Proceed???
the G6 was a completely one off design from what ive read.
i know that you can change the bellhousings over to fit various motors, but diff clearances may be an issue.
and if it comes down to an engine swap id be going for a WL-T anyway
