Rear Bench Seat for FJ40

Post by Flange »

I am thinking about putting in a rear bench seat in my FJ40, so that I can fit the family in, (baby in a child seat) as the side jump seats aren't suitable. Up to now I have had the baby seat in the front passenger seat and my wife has had to squeeze into the middle, but now that another baby is on the way I think my daughter had better move to the rear. Has anyone done this and had seat belts put in and have any advice for me? I also need to find a bench seat that will fit so does anyone with a 40 series have a rear bench seat that they want to get rid of? Thanks.

I got a couple of old bucket seats (I think from a Honda Civic) & bolted them in the rear, between the guards. I also put in seat belts, with the retractors bolted to the floor at the rear (on the roll cage mount) and through the runners attached to the top rear corners. To be legal, it would need to be certified, but I pull them out at WOF time. I've used 2 inch angle for the rear seat mounts, & high tensile bolts with backing plates, so I'm happy it's at least as solid as the factory front seat mounts. I carry two teenagers in the rear. It held up with a pretty rugged 3 time rollover, so proved itself to me....

The tricky thing was finding seats narrow enouch to fit two side by side between the wheel wells.

Hi flange, i thought the same and bought a bench seat out of a late model toyota liteace van. The seat was the correct width to fit into the back and sit over the rear wheel arches. The problem was that when it was in there was not enough head room for the people sitting in the seat.

I now plan to use the rear seats out of a 2 door rav4 as these should sit in between the wheel arches and will fold up nicely when are not being occupied.

When you get the seat installed, I would be really keen to see photos of it so I can copy. Sounds like a good idea. I was considering SWB safari seats for the same reason, able to fold down when not in use.
Keep us posted.
