make sure you get one with the firing pin modification done already. Otherwise it can be dangerous.
In SKS rifles the firing pin floats in the bolt and can reuslt in slam firing (full auto when you leats expect it - like when chambering a round).
I was going to ge one of these SKS as they are really cheap, but bought a saiga instead (few more dollars but way better rifle - its the civilian variant of the ak47). When you put them side by side the SKS looks like it was bunged together out of leftovers. Also be aware that the stock length is shorter then we Kiwis are used to (chinese are smaller I guess). Basically the cost of getting one of these up to spec was my decider, but your needs may be different to mine.
Got mine from a Chch gunsmith (talon arms I think) but I could be wrong. Checked it and it might be this one

Great so far. Havent fired it much but I have a work mate with one and he loves it to bits (lucky bugger got one with a druganov stock and quad rail fore grip).
Cheap to feed, bugger all parts to go wrong. Nice and simple and works in all climates dirty or clean.
Personally I'd save the extra and get the saiga. Guncity are a bit steep with their prices though so shop around.

I was just wanting a bit more info on the SKS firing pin mod. I have an SKS with a free floating and was aware of the slamfiring problem if it's not kept clean. I'm aware there are after market pins available with a return spring, is this the mod you are referring to?

hey Tom why a sks they are known for slam firing and they arr not the most reliable guns out there why not a mini14. only alittle bit more and there one u can look at in the gun store by the octogan my 2c anyways

i just have to rise in defense of the SKS here, 
there is a perpetual myth that the SKS will slam fire at the drop of a hat. THIS IS NOT TRUE. All slamfire issues can lead back to two main things .. Cleanliness and cleanliness. if your firing pin rattles and is spotless IT WILL NOT SLAMFIRE, simple as that. it takes two seconds to strip a SKS and give the bolt a shake .. if it rattles your good to go, the worst mistake people make is oiling the pin, leave it dry as oil picks up crud and dust and jams the pin very quickly.
If your really worried about slamfire issues a $40 Murrays firing pin will "fix" the problem forever, however cleaning your damn gun more than once a year does the same job.
My SKS did however have a bumpfire issue (totally different issue) and is caused by either a worn trigger Sear or a "bubba'ed" trigger sear (someone gets at it with a file to try and lighten the trigger) both issues can be fixed in 30 seconds with a new $12 trigger sear.
my SKS is ultra reliable and is a great <200 yrd bush gun in all sorts of weather and conditions and has provided untold goats for the freezer. and I consider it more than safe enough for my boys to use.

totally with meece people freak out at the firing pin issue which can be prevented with abit of knowledge and care. my sks i bought new in chicom oil grease whatever they call that crap and as soon as i got it i checked the firing pin and it was sticking out due to the chicom grease so as soon as you get one rip that bolt out and dump it in kerosene i actually stripped the rest of the rifle with brake cleaner and then rem oiled it. works a dream easy check tho for the firing pin is open the bolt then tip it upside down and right way up if the firing pin moves in and out easy your good to go.

I have one of the Norinco Sks and its a fantastic weapon!! Just keep it clean including all the gas parts! If you clean it after each time you use it and a little drop of oil along where the bolt runs she wont ever jam on you and is quite accurate and ammo is dirt cheap!! It seems to me that alot of people in NZ have a built in hate of semi autos that i cannot understand?? They are very handy

just to throw another hat into the ring, I just got a 223 vepr and LOVE it. Chrome line barrel etc etc. Not as classy perhaps as my buddys H&K, felt like the poor communist cousin, but reliable and smooth none-the-less.

longest sniper shot was done with a barrett m82 semi auto sniper rifle (2815m). with all the new technology there not allot of difference between the two but for deer hunting etc i stick to bolt and got semi auto 22 for rabbits etc

If you want ultra long range sneaky death shots which absolutely must hit the eyeball of your target on the oposite side of the forest then a single shot bolt action rifle is the way to go, but if its close up stuff and all you have to do is hit the kill zone on the chest then an SKS or cheap semi will be just fine.
The 7.62 short round (russian) is a good round and will drop medium game out to about 150M (probably a little more if pushed and the game is smaller, but 150M is a consistant kill range - any longer and the kinetic enegrgy is getting too low to expand a bullet or punch deep into the chest cavity)
A 7.62 long (nato) will reach out to about 500M and give clean kills (again probably more if pushed, but who hunts that far away - long way to walk to get your meat). If you are in scrub then realistically your range is limited to around 50-60M (maybe less in the tighter stuff) so your "superlongrangespitterofdeath" model rifle with all its gadgets isnt going to be of much help and your bullets may not expand properly creating a decent wound tract, potentially just punching right through creating a slower death (depending on the organs hit). And if you drop it ...? I know my Izmashi rifle (civilian AK) isnt going to win any awards for beauty or trophies at the range, but its dependable in all conditions, its open sights wont be affected by a dunk in water or a bump against a tree. Infact the open sights are probably a better choice for close in stuff. Of course if you are shooting on the tops then a longer range iron is a better choice - maybe a shitty old parkerised 303.
Regardless of the style of rifle or how much it cost you if you can hit an a4 sized target area at 100M (better if you can consistantly hit an a5 target though - this puts you in the smaller deer category too) then you get to take home some meat, if not then you need to practice more or get an account at the butchers and take up macrame.
Lets face it it doesnt matter if the rilfe is capable of sub MOA accuaracy at 100M or if it has a 2 inch accuracy at 100M. Thats enough to put food on the table.
Rifles are like Penis's as long as you get to use them regularly then who cares what they look like.

What, who me? Last shoot some 18months ago on a good day out (5knot wind staedy I got these results. Paper gone sorry but I got it out of my note book (was about the last time I played at targets until I got my new .22 - which is fecking awesome for the price - single hole 5 shot string at 50m on a bipod).
My izmashi ak will group about 1.5inch 5 rd groups at 100m, hot cold dirty or clean (better clean and cold - tightens up a little bit - and depends on how I am shooting too
), never bothered with 200m as its not for that.My .223 will group 1 inch at 200m on a good day and cloverleaf at 100 on a good day but it likes its bum wiped every 5 rds at the moment while I break it in still.
My remington pump knock off groups like a shot gun because it is one, no matter whether I use shot or solids the paper still looks the same - all over the place

I do own a couple of semi auto hunting rifles which are extremely accurate and reliable.
Lighter than a bolt action, just as accurate if not more so, faster follow up shots - whats not to like?

What about a Norinco NHM 90 ? The chinese AK in 223 or 762x39? Both cheap to feed. M14 is great but less mil surp unless I just dont notice.

i was tossing up whether to buy a norinco sks or m14...but instead i got a saiga 308...
blah blah blah wank wank about semi auto...
i got it cos
1: it was $650 and hadnt done much work.(norinco m14 was $500 well used), sks werent worth $300 imho
2: the norincos i had seen were shithouse quality(m14 was better than the sks)
3: im a rifleman in the army and i know that semi autos are more fun(make rambo grunt quotes if you like)
4: semi autos and groupings at range is down to the firer.
hell, i did a 5 shot serial and grouped at 7cm at 500m with a steyr 5.56 with 1.5x scope, these were fired within 30secs.
good luck taking down zombies with a bolt action,lol....
whatever floats your boat i guess, i just wanted a good rifle,and its is one..
currently getting a forward trigger mod and ak pistol grip stock...
if it hits the target its fine
