Reverse traction

Post by fullthrottle »

I've noticed that I can climb hills in reverse, much better than going forwards. Was having a play with it today and sure enough, every time a much better result in reverse.

Could this be something to do with the way the LSD in the rear locks up?

May have to start doing the trips in reverse instead :D Could be interesting

More to do with the weight over the wheels (engine) helping traction.

a lot of lsd diffs are worse in reverse. they lock up less in reverse than forwards.
weight and gearing i guess would be the main reasons.

reverse is lower than first gear because of the idler gear used to reverse the direction.so there is more torque multiplication occuring so easier to break traction aswell as less weight etc and to some extent suspension design

the theory runs out when momentum comes into play.... you cant go as fast in reverse as you can in your forward gears Ants Image

I'm sure those speedway cars race in reverse gear?? Don't they?

Only thing I can work out is that in reverse, the front is on the downhill side, so with all that weight bearing down onto the front wheels, the traction bites a lot more.

Going forwards the front is much lighter and well the back is light anyway. So less traction/bite.

Next time I get stuck going forwards, try it in reverse :D

i would have thought that 800hp going through a idler gear between the main and lay shafts wouldn't last too long.could be wrong though.that would also mean they would have to take off and race in the same gear.

Yeah its been a while, could be completely wrong. But I seem to remember they use it this way because the ratio allows them to wind it out longer. They never actually change gear.

Will have to do some research now. Maybe a night out at the speedway.....
Anyone keen :D

U sure its not because your rear end has much better flex than your front so both wheels stay on the ground and get much better bite with less slip.

With your ifs front you will find as you loose weight on one wheel (doesnt have to lift off ground) that u start spinning that wheel and loosing all forward momentum.
Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level then beat you with experiance!

i havn't been to speedway for ages.
with nz short tracks they only use one gear. modifies etc don't have gears.
not sure what boxes super salons have, i would not be surprised if they run two speed boxes which you can get in from the states.

Yeah fairly sure. The hill doesn't really have any bumps or holes. Its just a nice ramp up until nearly verticle

the only cars that dont have gears are sprint cars thats why they require a push start and can't go slow .modifieds etc run al sorts of gearboxes.cf bed ford landcruiser hq etc.most of the time they will take off/cruise in one gear and race in another

Are you talking good traction (gravel), or slippery (grass) or uneven surface (rutted)?

sprint cars need push start because they have no starters.
modifieds, which is a poor mans sprint car, has starter, clutch, and in/out straight through gearbox. (maybe they run two speed boxes these days). ratios are done with quick change diff.
salons all run gearboxes.
