landcruiser problems
Hi there ive got a 1992 landcruiser vx. A couple of months ago the splines on the end of my cvs and hub went so i lost front drive so replaced it with new cvs from BNT and hub from lineside. But after a while i ended up with a loud rubbing noise so took it all apart lots of times and then it dissapeared but 4wheeling in westport this weekend it came back worse than ever and now the car shakes quite badly but once i stop its fine it generally does it after slow corners. The wheel bearings diff halfshaft cvs driveshaft all look fine well they did a couple of weeks ago when i last looked.I will pull the whole front axle apart this weekend but does anyone know what it could be?
Thanks
Thanks

shimmy shimmy ? shakey shakey ? check your steering damper
and make sure your front wheel bearings are adjusted correctly, along with your top and bottom king pins....

If you already know everything, DON'T ask bloody questions!!
I know this one!
Have fixed several of these.
What happens is the little brass bush that is pressed into the flat side of the stub shaft wears out. This is the bearing surface that the CV shaft runs on. Should be a roller bearing for the wear and tear it gets. What happens is the CV shaft starts to rumble around inside the bush.
I've had one that was so bad the bush had turned into a two piece unit.
BJ auto's sell them or you can fleece them out of a 60 series stub shaft if your real careful.
When you reinstall them, make sure the grease grooves are on the bottom.
Cheers

I have just done both sides on my Hilux, same problem, HEAPS of play in the CV shaft if you pull the hub off.
First of all I thought I might be able to get away with just cleaning and greasing the bushings but I had to replace them on both sides in the end.
If you are going to tear it apart you may as well replace them, not that hard to do - on an IFS Hilux that is - no idea about the cruiser.
Cheers
Matt.

Not to thread jack, but the Safari's have a small needle roller bearing in their doing the job of the bush, and they fail regularly. If you get a small amount of water in the end cap of the hub (as Superwinch hubs are prone to), it travels straight down the axle and before you know it the bearings toast. The bush would handle that alot better

Are you planning to fix this issue yourself. I'd advise you buy the cruiser manual first.
If not. Follow these quidelines.
1.remove wheel and brake caliper.
2.remove drive flange/end cap and then wheel bearing nuts and lock tab washer.
3.slide disc rotor off and try and keep the outer bear falling off and landing in the big pile of dirt you just swept out of the way.
4. the good bit. You should be now looking at the stub shaft spindle thingy. Undo the 8 bolts around the outside and give a light tap with rubber hammer to release from swivle hub. This is the piece that needs work.
5. Take stub shaft and stand spindle end up in vice. With a drift or in my case a long flat head screw driver, drive out the brass bush from inside the stub shaft.
6. Turn stub shaft up the other way and refit new bush with grease groves on the bottom. I just tap in with rubber hammer. Maybe a piece of wood and a real hammer if needed. This brass bush is real soft.
7. Put everything back together making sure you grease that bush well before placing over CV.
Hope that helps.

well i pulled them apart today and the right front had been rubbing so i just cleaned them up abit and completely regreased everything. Hopefully that will solve it if not ill just get new ones does anyone have a number of someone who sales them. All i could find was toyota and they wanted $2oo+ for each one. I also got my wheels balanced last week and the left front was way out so that might expalin the shaking. Thanks for all your help
