1KZ-TE KZN130 Fault Code 42
1KZ-TE KZN130 Fault Code 42
As per title, anyone have any experience with this fault code?
1995 Toyota Hilux Surf KZN130 1KZ-TE Automatic.
Flashing A/T Oil Temp light, and then later a flashing O/D Off light, were what drew my attention to the issue(s) and after doing a manual diag I found a single logged fault, of 42.
Please share any info. if you have any! Thanks.

Re: 1KZ-TE KZN130 Fault Code 42
42 for engine is "Speed Sensor"
checker the wiring & the plug
check the sensor
check ECU.
42 for trans "defective number 1 speed sensor
severed wire or short circuit.

Re: 1KZ-TE KZN130 Fault Code 42
Speedo works fine so that rules out the speed sensor, right? So that means a fault between the speedo and the ECU?
Re: 1KZ-TE KZN130 Fault Code 42
There may be another speed sensor in the instrument cluster.

Re: 1KZ-TE KZN130 Fault Code 42
Have you tried clearing the fault code by disconnecting the battery(ies) for a few minutes. Then going for a drive a recheck the fault codes???
Re: 1KZ-TE KZN130 Fault Code 42
pm me your email addy & ill send you the doc i have on auto fault codes
Re: 1KZ-TE KZN130 Fault Code 42
there two speed sensors the rear one usually controls the speedo. have a look at your front one

Re: 1KZ-TE KZN130 Fault Code 42
There are normally two speed sensors..
Toyota typically uses one in the trans normally in the tail section...
For us 4x4 ers its in the adapter between box and transfer case.
The second is in the instrument cluster..
Normally those with cable speedo's.

Ok so if my speedo is working fine wouldn't that rule out either of the speed sensors? If not, how exactly do you check both of them?
No haven't tried clearing the fault code. Could it have been caused by a short during a water-pass and since been dry and ok but the fault code is still logged so it still flashes the lights at me? The A/T Oil Temp light is the first to come on and stays on solid after like a minute of the truck being turned on. Also, instead of disconnecting the batteries does anyone know the fuse to remove to reset fault codes?

Re: 1KZ-TE KZN130 Fault Code 42
just disconnect the +ve connection to the battery for a few minutes dont worry about pulling fuses to do it
Re: 1KZ-TE KZN130 Fault Code 42
Hmmm, just disconnected all ECU plugs for 1-2minutes to reset the fault codes etc. (didn't want to disconnect power as have a few things in their that have a memory) and then took the truck for a quick drive. Didn't have much time on a break so only got it up to about 70-72'C (just below the 76-80ish it normally sits at) but the A/T OIL TEMP light didn't come on at all, it usually came on within a minute or two of driving.
Didn't have time to check the fault codes but will do that when I knock off this arvo and see if it still shows one or not - will take it for a decent drive first so I know it hit operating temp for a worth-while amount of time.
Hoping it was just a short circuit whilst on the beach or in the water that logged an error but fixed itself as soon as the water dried out or dripped off.
Will post up if the lights come back or not and what the fault codes (if any) I get this arvo. Fingers crossed.
EDIT: Very odd indeed. Just took it out for about a 45min drive. Got up to operating temp (but seemed to run cooler for some reason? impossible? was around 70'C for a good 20-30min until I floored it and it got up to 80'C), A/T OIL TEMP light never came on or flashed or anything, O/D OFF light never came on or flashed or anything, got home and checked for fault codes, CHECK ENGINE and O/D OFF lights both flashed 2 times a second i.e. every 0.25seconds which means no faults logged/found. WHAT THE!?!?
Any auto sparky's out there able to tell me if I'm correct in what I said before? That on the beach going through a puddle or through Muriwai inlet up to the door level may have shorted something out for a split second and then came right once the water dripped off or dried up but it was enough to log a fault code and give me all the drama with the A/T OIL TEMP light issues and then the O/D OFF light issues? And simply clearing the fault codes put everything "back to normal"?
I guess the true test will be the next time on the beach if the A/T OIL TEMP light comes on again or not (without going through the water)? I'm hoping it doesn't so I know at least it was never overheating and was instead just warning me to the fault code.

Re: 1KZ-TE KZN130 Fault Code 42
Went for a bush hack yesterday which included giving it a bit (a lot) of shit (i know nothing compared to sand but would still have been enough to set the AT Oil Temp light off again) and went absolutely fine, the truck ran at 78-82ish degrees the whole time.
Definitely recommend blanking off the in-rad cooler and getting a big 8cyl cooler in any auto 1kzte!!! Aux fan also worked a treat.

No prob, you run into the same prob? Also recommend hitting up Toyota for a genuine 72'c thermostat, helps keep the autos nice and cool in addition to the external cooler (and disconnecting the in-rad one).
Recently did a 300km drive and the beast never went over 80'c on windy roads and big hills.
