Hi all.
Im new to the site.
I wanted to ask a few questions about a small issue of hydrolocking my lwb 92 vitara in a river.
I have been told the moter is stuffed and so are the electrics,
They got 1.4ltrs out of the motor but said things inside are bent.
It is lifted with old man emu shocks etc.
new gear box, diff and a fear few other items as well.
I was wondring if all my goodies will bolt into the 3door jlx or am i better to just get the motor recond, and all the electrics redone
Not to sure what i would be getting buy buying a nother one.
mine has been trouble free till now.
no rust.
interested to hear your views

Re: swb lwb
It's very unlikely that any of the electrics are stuffed as water doesn't really break anything. Electrics just tend not to work while they are filled with water. High voltage type stuff like the ignition system is most at risk. Take everything that is not sealed apart and dry it very well, should live again.
Mechanical things like engines on the other hand are much more at risk. The main problem being that water doesn't compress very well, so what happens is you get some water into the air inlet, this gets "sucked" into the combustion chamber and when the piston moves up to compress it, it cannot. The usual result at his point if you are very lucky is that the engine just stalls rapidly, if you are unlucky then the connecting rods bend. I don't think the valves will bend, but someone might correct me.
If it were mine I would probably just look around for a 'good' engine out of a wrecked vitara as it's pretty easy swapping out a engine.
Good Luck

When I watered mine I bent 2 connecting rods out of 6. I rebuilt the engine with second hand rods, new bearings and rings and it runs ok. My advice would be to replace the engine with a good low km unit if you can't do the rebuild yourself as the cost of a rebuild I suspect will be quite high.
Re: swb lwb
when it happend I droped down a steep decline, water came over the bonnet
and it went for around 10mtrs before just carking out. I did not try to start it.
however i had to walk 15km to find someone to pull me out.
it spent around 6hrs in the drink.
would a snorkle have stopped this issue???
seems like it just took a lung full
will a petrol moter run submerged if it can still get air or am i limeted to plugs and dizzy hight ,im gessing yes due to water stopping a spark.
there for i can not understand how a snorkle may benifit me,,

As I understand it a snorkel willstop water getting into the engine (which is when things get bent) there are tricks with the dizzy to keep it dry (and engine running), dont ask me what the tricks are as I drive a diesel but a search of the forums should find them.
Re: swb lwb
If you have a well sealed snorkel it will prevent engine damage like this
You may still drown the electrical system and the motor may conk out but at least thats not permanent.

Re: swb lwb
be aware, if it is a daily driver and further down the track you have a crash and the insurance inspector suspects water damage (ie abs could have possibly faulted etc) kiss your insurance good bye
Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.
Re: swb lwb
only have 3rd party on it,
it was an intended disposable.
ill just by a new one, there cheep enouff.
From there if an an inspector notices water damage thay will have to talk with vtnz,,they put the wof on it.

Well i have managed to find a nice little 16v 93 3door,
Same year and moter as my 5door.
My old one has a nice old man emu suspension lift in it.
( Will this bolt into the 3 door without dramas ?)
Or have I made a bit of a opps.?

Re: swb lwb
Yes the suspension lift will fit the SWB, however if the lift kit was made specifically for the LWB it will give more lift and a harsher ride in a SWB due to the weight difference.
Re: swb lwb
Well it all fitted in ok but I have a few things playng on my mind.
It is sitting hi Alot more then the lwb ever did
.
But looking at the front, the wheels appeared to be bowing out at the top.
I got under and had a look and the front springs and it appears to be slightly bowing as well.
Not sure what is causing this?? or how to go about fixing the problem.
it rides and handles really well but this spring thing is really playing on my mind.

Re: swb lwb
The reason why the springs sit funny is because of the angle the control arm is on, I assume you are still running factory 'A' arms? Aftermarket arms, eg calmini are made to correct this. The camber issue could be corrected with a set of camber bolts.
