hi all
looks like im going to be towing a 16ft jetboat 130kms each way at new years. It has no issues doing this trip not towing.
truck is surf with 1uz auto running 4.88s on 35 tires. has big external trans cooler with own cooler fan.
ive heard conflicting stories on towing with autos - some say dont use overdrive at all and some say use od but turn off on hills on when the trans starts shifting heaps.
Which way would be best and why?
dont wanna rebuild trans yet.
cheers

Common sense really, leave the over drive off when on hills and taking off. once up to cruising speed put it on. If it feels like it is not right take it out of overdrive.
There is no hard and fast rule to it.

Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.

ive never had a problem, i just use the selector like a manual sort of, take of in first and go up to drive.
use overdrive/2nd to engine brake/ assist with braking.

Id be picking up a set of 31 ats or even road tyres on rims.
Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level then beat you with experiance!

This, throw your rims in the boat even.
What box is it? the 1UZ or the factory surf one ?
To Boon or not to Boon.

Drive it like a manual.
Start off in first and change up when the revs say so etc.
Where you will have problems is if you just leave it in drive and it is trying to change up and can't quite make the change happen. I don;t know how the internals of the auto work at that stage. But that is where I had the o/temp light come on. At that stage I just put it in first and left it there for the rest of that hill. the O/temp light went off after 50 meters or so..
I do use my o/drive but in my auto box that is like 4th gear. I leave o/drive off in all other gears....

I did heaps of research on this when I had my 80 series, and the consensus was that using over drive, or more importantly lock up of the torque converter is vital to keeping your trans temp down.
In most auto's, lock up usually only occurs in over drive.
Do some quick google research on how a torque converter works and you can see how heat is created when the TQ isn't locked up.

on the flat you should be able to hve it in just drive, otherwise youl spend a fair bit more on gas.
just make sure before you you hit a hill or want to speed up for any reason ya go into o/d
