G16B Check Engine light

Post by Mudde1 »

Any one know what activates the "Check Engine " light on a G16B. No 1 son was driving his when the "Check Engine" light came on, but went off a few seconds later. It then got very hot very quickly. On inspection it was found to have a significant hole in the radiator and no water. When cooled down it seemed to run OK and was able to be driven the length of the driveway. Radiator was replaced and it now uses water and has a rough idle. presumably it has a blown head gasket/ cracked head, but what i wonder is what activated the check engine light?? Any ideas? Any one happen to have a spare 16Gb laying around looking for a home?

ecu temp sender (the one at the bottom of the thermostat that goes straight to ecu) may have activated it when the water was very hot, if it pissed out all the water the sender will not work hence maybe the reason it turned off. id say its been hot and done a head gasket. the alloy heads on these are prone to cracking. can get new heads reasonably priced on trademe. good luck finding a spare g16b, they are a very popular engine for samurai conversions and attract a high price becasue of this, anthing between 600 - 1500. theres always the odd deal out there though if you can find it.

cheers

how do I tell if it is a 1st or second generation? It looks as if we will need to find him another car for Christmas, then sort it out in the new year, so not urgent.

Roughtly what year is it ? The later models were slightly different in the position of a few sensors etc , noticeable in the intake manifold area if you know what you were looking at . I forget now the details , will see if I can find a pic of the two .

I may have an engine early next year , possibly removng a g16b from a 413 and installing another g16 and its auto . Easier to pull whole lot out than swap the auto in . Its one of teh older ones about a 92 .

Thanks for that Chris. it's a 1995, but presumably it won't matter much.Sounds like a solution. I will see you on Sunday and have a chat if time permits.

My escudo check eng light comes on going round left hand corners. All fluids etc are fine and it uses a bit of oil but its quite high k'd. Couldn't find the source of the issue.

Had the head off and replaced the head gasket, started first time and sounds fine, except i can't get it to idle, revs at random revs between 2000 and 3500, revs up and down for no apparent reason, can't find any vacuum lines cracked or disconnected,or any sensors disconnected. pulled the idle control valve vacuum hose and off then blocked it off, but made no difference. also cleaned the pipe under it, but again, no change. Any advice or ideas??

bottom timing gear keyway was all flogged on mine. Quite common. took me a while to figure out why it wouldn't time up right and yeah its idle was rubbish. Could be other reasons but that was mine.

Hey there

Im pretty new to this but I bought a Vitara last week and it came with an english manual.
It says in the manual that the check engine light is for the cat converter.
If it comes on then your cat in blocked or stuffed or to quote the manual, "not operating normally"
Hope this helps.

If you want to borrow the manual or photocopy bits of it, let me know. Also good for oil weights etc.

Sounds like you might have some plumbing wrong or a gasket leak. If you block the idle control valve the engine should stall as no air will be getting to it.
