270 vs 7mm 08

Post by Glenn J »

I'm looking at a New deer rifle. Just want to know which is better out of a 270 or 7mm 08
taking into consideration price and availability of bullets.

very similar ballistics, 7mm 08 kicks a lot less, and fits a short action
both ammo is piss easy to come by...
'85 Hilux crawler, 3rz, duals, 4.7's, 4.88's, ARB's, 30 spline Longfields, 6 stud SNR4x4 Histeer, Airshocks up front, coiled rear, 40" Iroks.

completely and utterly different ballistics.

depends
what deer?
where?
bush?
tops?
extreme range?
reloading?
how fussy you are on grouping?
etc
etc
etc

too many variables

edit to add: but if you're not up to speed on ballistics and the pros and cons of it all and just want something that goes BANG then Jaffa is spot on  both will kill deer fine on any given day in any average condition at any average range if you can hold it pointing in the right direction.

Very good points Wop, I was just thinking about deer in the bush, they shoot pretty much the same, I haven't noticed any difference except the 270 kicks harder, perhaps the use of the word "ballistics" wasn't the best thing to say  real world comparison with factory ammo, out to about 250m at the most, if you hit the target it dies with either

true that.

recoil depends on breed of rifle a lot too, i had a Browning stainless stalker A bolt .270win that poked a 130gn sierra game king pill at 3200fps and it was a kitten to shoot. im a big fan of Browning arms, as soon as they release the lefthand X-Bolt stainless stalker im getting one in 7mmWSM (had an A bolt medalion in 7wsm and it also was a kitten)

A bit of a ford vs holden debate that one

I shoot a 7mm08 but I don't think there's much in it. I'd say it's more important to get a quality rifle and find out what factory ammo it likes, or get a load developed (I pay around $30 for 20 very accurate rounds that way).

All I know is 270s seem to be more popular on SI and 7mm08s on NI.

But I think either one will do the job.

So true, a remington 710 in 270 told my 55kg 5foot frame to stay the hell in the kitchen.
horrible economy rifle

I have a ruger .270, I think its a nice easy to use gun.
It's got less kick then my old man's Winchester M70 .243

And I have a suppressor that makes it even less kick again, And quiet too.

IMO, either will be sweet as, .270 maybe slightly better at longer ranges...

this is a good example of "felt recoil". recoil is a bit more than just the amount of power and speed pushing on your shoulder.
rugers are heavy so its a slow push on the shoulder, wheres as a lighter rifle will hit you a bit faster.
also noise is a big factor. a sharp bang tends to make recoil feel worse than it really is.
then thers fit. a better fitting gun will not only shoot better but feal less recoil.

i've got a Win m70 in 243 and its got NO recoil whatso ever. but its got one hell of a crack to the blast. compare that to my ruger (6.5) which is heavier but it pushes me a lot more but the sound is more of a boom than a crack.
mates lightweight 270 is to pain full to shoot anymore than 6 rounds out of it.

now to top it all off, no matter what you shoot, your not going to notice the recoil when you have a deer lined up. its really only when your shooting at targets that you notice it. bad thing is that it can teach you to flinch.
so better to shoot targets with a low recoil rifle and use the big gun for hunting.

Im *just* (when wet and 14 layers of clothes on) pushing 60kg, I find the recoil on my .270 Savage not too bad, the old shoulder hurts a bit after 20 or 30 rounds or so but for the average hunting trip the recoil isnt an issue, and the savage is light enough to hump around and still bring 40kg of meat out in the backpack. Ive done some very nice long range shots with the .270 and certainly love its accuracy, my only problem is the ammo makes it a little expensive to use as a goat gun too often.

Well i Bought a 7mm08 in the end for my christmas present to myself. Never got to test it out on deer because we decided it was too windy in the Tararua ranges but it did a nice job knocking over Billies haha
also the ammos heaps cheaper and better selection than my lee enfield
