You'll have to pull the lock. Its engraved on it. Mine is now written on the inside of the door after getting sick of pulling it.

I just got a key cut today for my new pajero, the guy just looked up the model and year on his computer for the base key them typed some number after looking at the key put it in some fancy machine and was done. I couldn't see what numbers he was reading off the original key so no idea how he did it, was like he was reading the profile.
Have taken a barrel into them before too

the numbers refer to what tension the springs have i think, or something along those lines anyway.
i just make sure i have a spare key in the first place so they can copy it when it breaks.

The number you want is on the [b]Drivers[b] side door barrel only. There is a 5 digit number but you only need the last 4 numbers and on a terrano it is on the little metal tailbar on the back of the lock. If you have both parts of the broken key then just take them to a decent locksmith and they will sort it for you. And get a spare while you are there.

A good locksmith can decode the worn key and cut a 'brand new' key. However that doesnt mean it will work perfectly as the barrels would probarly be worn as well.
And yes , 9 times out of 10, the key code is on drivers side.
