To LSD or not to LSD, Front diff

Post by Dirtydog »

So when i started the sas project on my terrano,

i went and brought two rear terrano lsd's, one to go in the rear and one to go in the front.

needless to say i have only gotten so far and truck is sitting there with lsd rear, open front.

I am still on the gate wether i should put the lsd in the front, or leave it open untill i can get a air locker (or similar)

heres what ive got so far:

Pros:
The extra traction that it brings (4 wheels are better than 3)
easy to tune to being tight or loose
not expensive to replace compared to locker or lockrite

cons:
When in 4wd front tries to go straight ahead rather than turn
leaves me without a spare for the back
(possibly) more chance to break things

So what are your guys views on this?

it would be good to hear a few other ideas about it, or maybe a work around

Put it the LSD in dude. Then ya can build up the open diff head with locker whilst out and simply swap em.

Ultimately the LSD will let go before ya cv does. Hence people pop them in the front.

And as for the wheels gettin pulled straight etc, just get the Armstrong steering mod. It'll see ya right.

Put it in. Got one in my trol diff in my cruiser. Doesn't really try to pull you straight or do anything like that. It's not as good as having a locker obviously but its far better than an open diff.

Hmm, thats very true about building the locker part.

I supose if its too aggressive i can always loosen it up a bit.

An I correct in thinking you're only running 33"s? Even on 35"s you will barely notice any adverse affects of the LSD  I don't even notice mine with 10psi in 37"s (now that I have a functioning steer pump  )

planning to run 35's at the most, but 33's for now.

gunna have to drop back down to 31s though, my bighorn now has the 33's on it, much nicer to drive.

dont mean too high jack this, but have searched with no luck..

do you swap the entire centre over? as the front safari is high pinion to go over tierod, is rear terrano also high pinion? or just swap pinon, crown wheel and lsd into saf diff centre? if that makes sense.

You only put the Terrano LSD in the Safari diff.

Just swap terrano rear lsd centre into safari front housing, use safari crownwheel and pinion still. Easy when you say it like that
