Diesel Alternator

Post by fullthrottle »

Hi All

Just investigating whether I need to upgrade my TD27 alternator, as I suspect the old girl isn't handling the new winch after a while and will end up draining the battery. The battery is a fairly new and good quality 670CCA

Does anyone know what the standard TD27 alternator puts out in AMPs?

The main thing I don't know is if the vacuum produced across all diesel alternators is the same or needs to be the same for the brake booster.

There are some bigger alternators out there from various trucks, but just need the mounts modified.

Any advice appreciated.

Cheers

670cca is probably not quite up there either to be honest.

for example the setup on my mistral for example is a 120amp hitachi altornator with a commercial truck battery with a 120Ahr rating. CCA is 860. 20mm leads that feeds a 9500pnd winch.

its a new toy Ants of course your going to flatten a few batteries at the start putting it under trial and evaluation :P

That setup should should be fine for what you'd do in that truck, keep the engine running and bring the revs up to maximise the alt while your winching. If your trying to spend all day winching logs around up in the back paddock no battery and electric winch is going to cope with that for sustained periods and you'll have to tell Mother your going to have to sell the whole lot and buy yourself a new landcruiser or Safari with a pto winch :D

Calcium battery :?: :?:

if so it will need a calcium charger thrown at it every so often for a top up

Alt should have a sticker on it saying the amps rating. A navara one I looked at the other day (mine has sticker gone) had 50amp rating.
Vacuum pumps do have different ratings, but if you've got no vacuum leaks, and not running other things (eg egr system) from the vacuum setup, then a smaller rated pump won't cause any issues (unless you like to brake repeatedly often).
Definitely use the idle up control when winching, most alternators struggle to charge any decent amperage under 1000-1500 rpm.
Even having the headlights on will stop battery from charging at idle. Won't drain, but don't charge either..

Cheers for the advice guys.

Couldn't find my sticker, but will whip it out anyway and get it checked. The issue I have is being down the bank, trying to winch the truck out with firewood all of a sudden dead battery.
Maybe a second battery that the winch doesn't draw from would be the go. I have a big empty space under the bonnet now that I've de-cluttered :-)

Seen a nice replacement that produces 390 Amps which you could power a small city off. But costs the same a a small city.

definately something up if you flattened the battery that quick, how long did you continuious winch for Ants?

my old 8274 used to winch all day on my flatdeck cruiser with a dedicated 770CCA battery and a 85A alternator

you might want to rethink a 390A alt you'd need a chain drive to stop the belt slipping and the amount of load would probably stall the TD27

Nah haven't killed it yet. Just running short bursts of no more than 1 min at a time. Its just the not knowing when its going to die.
Wouldn't want to inconvenience you with a call you come pull me out :-)

Interesting performance you got out of yours.

no vac pump on those. tho good for a 2nd alt.
plenty of later model big alternators. most of the common rail engines have far bigger alts, i think later navara are 120 amp.

but if your going to spend heaps why no go hydraulic and run it off the power steering pump.

just a note dont fit a alternator with a smaller vac pump,we did one at work on a mistral ( i work as a sparky so a brand new alt..) and had issues with the vaccumm warning coming on if I remember right. ended up swaping it for another altenator with the correct vaccum pump and was allgood.
modified surf, hardly drive it seem to keep modifying it....

Hey Ants was it just loading up and slowing down or actually flattening the battery ie: were you unable to start the truck after you'd been winching?

Its normal for an electric winch to go down to stall speed when it loads up the RPM changes with the load unlike a starter moter that stays at a constant RPM untill the battery goes flat :D
