Getting an old Landy back on the road

Post by jonnyboy »

Hi Folks,

I have just aquired a 1979 Landy in reasonable condition that I hope to put back on the road. Its registraion expired in 2006 and is currently exempt class B.

I have never tried to reregister an old vehicle before and was wondering if anyone had any advice or info on what would be involved?

Thanks

Give VTNZ a call. I think its reasonably easy to re-registar them if they have already been on NZ roads.

However if it is on a B class reg, that implies that it is still rego'd :?
Once again VTNZ will tell you.

I will give them a call.

The carjam report says the Rego is "Lapsed" so I am guessing that I could just get the exemption cancelled and pay the license fee.

Cheers

A vehicle that has previously been registered in NZ can be registered again with a sort of strick WoF check at a vehicle compliance centre. They will check for rust, brakes and other usual safety items and then if OK then issue you a warrant.
Full details and explanation can be found at
http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/facts ... hicle.html

Cost is usually around $400-$450 mark (against a usualy WoF fee of $50) so it will give you an idea of the time they take checking everything thoroughly.

Yep, needs an inspection and re-registering as the exemption has lapsed.

Apparently I can apply to keep using the Black & Silver plates which makes the rego $20 cheaper!

If you have the original ownership papers it is a lot easier especially if it is in your name. Any history makes it easier.

If you don't have that info you will need to go to the police with a form to prove it is not a stolen vehicle.

Regarding keeping the plates you will need to photo them and send them to the vehicle registrar in Palmerston North to prove they are still in good enough condition for the speed cameras.

If it hasn't been modified and is running the original engine and brakes you will only need a re-entry check at VTNZ which is a bit better than a normal WOF but if it has another engine it will probably need certification.

I put a 1949 Landrover back on the road with out too much problem

They dont use the Police forms any more you need a statutory declaration of ownership signed by a Court Registrar.

When I spoke to the NZTA they said that the exemption had expired so had to be reregistered and inspected etc.

I have just discovered that its not got the original engine in it. At some point an early series 2a engine has been been dropped in. Its not in a good state so will need a rebuild or swapping for a running motor.

There isn't any paperwork with the vehicle apart from an old rego on the windscreen. I am not the original owner so may have some fun when it comes to getting it back on the road.

For now I am going to spend some time restoring it. It needs a bit of welding on the rear cross member and one of the door pillars. A new engine or maybe a rebuild of the old one. Plus a general tidy up.

Anyone got any recommendations on where to source a replacement engine? Somewhere not to far from hawkes bay?

Cheers

yeah probably one thats already attached to a chassis with tags and live rego would be the best place to start looking then you can swap all your shit over to it and save yourself a shitload of work and drama trying to get your truck complied and back into the system, my $0.02 worth
